Event Write-Up

We had a wonderful turn out with warm weather and clear skies for orienteering at China Camp State Park on Sunday, July 10, 2005. There were 238 participants, with 158 entries, on eight standard-length courses. Yellow had the most entries with 29, but surprisingly, Red had the second most with 25 entries, followed by Blue and Orange with 22. Rex Winterbottom set some very runnable courses that were similar to a long sprint. Many runners said they enjoyed their courses and the different format. No one missed the punishing climb in the upper reaches of the park.
Jimmy and Mai Chung won the 1.8 kilometer White course with a time 29:33, but less than a minute away was Don and Liam Bartling with a time of 30:07.
The Yellow course of 2.8 km provided a tight finish with Jukka Karras (29:39) edging out Greg Barber (30:30) by just under a minute.
The two top orienteerers on Orange completed the 3.7 km and 225m-climb course in less than 60 minutes. Jaakko Karras burned up the course in 52:30, and Jon Bonwick navigated it in 56:39.
Long Orange had only 6 participants. Adam Citarella had the fastest time of 86:34 for the 6.1 km course.
Brown had some fast times, with five runners breaking the one-hour mark on the 3.2 km course. Gary Kraght had a great run at 48:49, which was more than 4 minutes faster than Todd Paulsen.
The top four individuals on the 4.2 km Green course finished within 5 minutes of each other. Malcolm Wyatt-Mair won with a time of 56:39, and George Minarik was just a few minutes behind. Evan Custer and Bob Cooley were just a couple minutes behind George.
Three men completed the popular Red course of 5.6 km and 275 m climb within three minutes of each other. Matthias Kohler successfully avoided downed trees and completed the course in 1:05:33. Second place was very close with Tapio Karras three seconds ahead of Bruce Wolfe.
Mikkel Conradi did the long Blue course of 6.6 km and 375 m climb in a rapid time of 1:10:34, which is less than 11 minutes per kilometer.
I would like to thank all of the people who helped put on this successful event. First, Rosemary Johnson painstakingly received the necessary insurance endorsements to allow us permission to use the State Park. These forms were finally received the Wednesday before the meet.
Rex Winterbottom set all of the courses, field checked, and hung the controls. He also worked at advanced starts, sitting in the hot sun all day.
Steve Gregg helped Rex with the difficult job of inputting the courses on the computer, reviewing them, and submitting them to Bob Cooley to print. He also vetted the courses, and during the day of the event single handedly set up the e-punch unit and ran the e-punch download station until Evan Custer took over.
Thanks also are extended to Evan Custer for manning the download station and posting the advance results shortly after the end of meet.
Scott Aster was an invaluable consultant on the beginning courses. He vetted the beginning courses and made a few suggestions. He greeted people as they arrived and assisted in managing the flow of people to registration and the starts. He also helped with finishes.
Bob Cooley printed the maps under a rather short time frame. We all appreciate his time and effort of providing the club with the indispensable job of map printing.
The registration crew was headed by Gary Kraght and assisted by first-timers Dan Dwyer and Jackie Wong. Dan also did a beginners clinic when the need arose. Thank you so much for the excellent job with registration.
On the morning of the event, Bud Laird helped me with set up. He helped with beginner starts until his relief came at 11:00.
Anne Gorby's delightful laugh was heard at finishes, where she recorded the finishing time and calculated the time spent on the course.
Joan Roos took some time greeting people before her run, and afterwards she left for Canada.
Judy Koehler was a big help with greeting and directing everyone in the right direction. Judy conducted the beginner's clinics, introducing all the newcomers to the sport of orienteering. She also assisted in tracking down and verifying the one group whose control card was missing. Judy also contacted various newspapers to provide publicity for the BAOC.
Pick up crew was finished in record time by: Harold and Penny DeMoss, Mark Blair, Leslie and George Minarik, Nancy Lindeman, and Peter Graube.
Mark Rice was one of the first runners and then helped replace a control that was missing on White.
Ian volunteered to present an Adventure Racers clinic, but it was not needed with the low turnout of adventure racers.
I extend my apologies to anyone that I have not recognized for volunteering.
Two items of clothing were left behind. If you have misplaced a T-shirt or long-sleeve shirt, let me know.
