2009–2010 Season Status (as of Feb. 11, 2010)

We've had a whole bunch of meets this season, and now there are only two left: The B-meet at Shell Ridge, and the BAOC COOL Championship meet at Bayfront Park.

They say that nothing is constant except change, and that seems to be the way of the league as well...

Elementary Girls

For the first time ever, Julia Doubson has lost her hold on first place. Last Sunday, Hannah Kopish had her fourth win, at Bear Valley Cross Country, and now is in the lead (determined by the fifth-best points, since both have 400 points). But Julia still has a chance, if she pulls out another win or two in the remaining meets. This could be close.

In third is Johanna Karras, with three wins and a close second. The top three are all within 1 percent of each other.

Of note is Katie Petersen, who after only three meets, is holding on to fourth place, with a win, a second, and a third.

Rookie Natalie Kim, in fifth place, also after only three meets, shows promise. Her score gets higher each meet.

This whole crew of twelve young women are quite impressive. I received more than one comment at Pacheco regarding how impressed out-of-state visitors were with our girls on the course, who were fast, focused, and doing in their words "real orienteering".

Elementary Boys

Rookie Gavin Smith is the leader here with four wins and a perfect 400. After attending the Junior Day Camp in 2008, he joined the league in 2009, and is setting the pace. Most impressive is his win at Tilden Park, where the White course was national level and more difficult than the courses at the city parks.

In second place is Davy Williams, who two years ago began as a tag-along and was known then as Gavin Williams' younger brother. Davy has made a name for himself here with two wins and a strong second at Tilden.

Rory Maclean holds third place over TJ Hawes by only one point. There could be some action between these two. To note is that Rory ran on Yellow against the Middle School Boys at Tilden, giving Rory a lower score then he would have had on White, and that is impressive. Rookie Andrew Kim, in fifth place, is the guy you want to watch. With only three meets Andrew has scored two wins, both topping leader Gavin Smith. The course at Tilden, however, did bring him up short a bit, with a distant third. A couple of more wins, and Andrew could knock Davy Williams out of second place.

Middle School Girls

Scout-O scholarship winners Talia Peterson and Amanda Radtke lead the vastly larger pack than last year. Amanda stumbled a bit at Oyster Bay compared to Talia's impressive 10-minute pace, but made up at Tilden's challenging Yellow course.

Masha Konkov sits at third place with only three meets, and an impressive three wins. One more win could pull her up to first.

Middle School Boys

William Morris and David Harrison have been trading first place back and forth, but now William has taken a commanding lead with seven wins. The Morris juggernaut seems unstoppable, and he has set his first course at this weekend's Shell Ridge B-meet.

Gavin Williams in third place has one win, but seems to be getting progressively better, and took a close third place at Tilden with an "amazing for Tilden" pace of thirteen minutes.

JV Girls

Juliette Delforge-Melia and Kathryn Stutz hold first and second place, after running in only two and one meet respectively. This field is still wide open!

JV Boys

Daniel and Philipp Kopisch ran JV the first meet, and Varsity the others, but have elected not to change their class at this point. They could still do that and give some competition to our lone Varsity boy, Jonathan Hallsted. The Kopisch boys' performance this year has been hit and miss, with both brothers losing to rookie Jonathan at their first two match-ups. It seems that illness and injuries may have taken their toll on the twins. But then, out of the blue, Phillip won a commanding first place at Tilden, not only hugely outclassing Daniel and Jonathan, but beating every other Green runner that day, and we have some great Green runners in our club!

Varsity Girls

Unchallenged, and with a perfect 400, Bronwen Caplinger is our highest scoring High School girl ever, and only Varsity girl this year. She made her course setting debut last month when she set her first course at Oyster Bay.

Varsity Boys

Rookie Jonathan Hallsted seems to be a natural at this. In his second meet at McLaren Park, he wowed the other sprinters by finishing 23 out of 30 in a tough field. With four wins and a third, Jonathan has a perfect 400 points.
