1999 US Individual Championships
Starts, Finishes, & Results
Start Areas & Procedures
We will have remote starts and two start areas on both days. The
Gold Start
will be for all advanced courses and the Day 2 competitive Orange course.
The Silver Start will be for the competitive
White and Yellow courses, the Day 1 competitive Orange course,
as well as all recreational courses (White, Yellow, Orange). Our
event map shows the locations of the starts
and finishes for both days.
Day 1: The Gold Start is 1,250 meters
from the Event Center and a 45-meter climb. It should take 20-30 minutes to
walk from the Event Center to the Start. After you cross
to the west side of Highway 28, you must remain on the dirt road until you
start on your course. The terrain on either side of the road to the Start
is out of bounds.
The Silver Start for Day 1 is 300 meters
from the Event Center and should take about 10 minutes to walk.
Day 2: The Gold Start is 2,500 meters from the Event Center.
We will have buses to shuttle competitors to the the Tahoe Rim Trail trailhead
at the top of Spooner Summit on Hwy 50.
(This is the same area used for the Model Event.) It will probably be a
5-minute bus ride, and there should be a bus leaving every 15 minutes or so.
It will then be a 730-meter walk with 35 meters of climb from the highway
to the Start area, which should take 15-20 minutes to walk. Please allow enough
time to park, get the shuttle bus, and hike to the Start before your assigned
start time. If you are running late, you may want to have a friend drop you off
at Spooner Summit, and avoid having to take the bus. We will not be able to change your
start time if you arrive late.
The Silver Start for Day 2 is 300 meters from the Event Center with no
climb, and should take 5-10 minutes to walk.
Call-up: You will be called to the start line about 4 minutes before
your start. At 2 minutes before your start, you will advance to the
start line. When the whistle blows to indicate time to start, you will
follow a streamered route for about 50 meters to the start triangle, at
which point you will pick up your map, and immediately begin navigating
to the first control. It is your responsibility to make sure that
you have the correct map.
Important timing rule: USOF Rule 31.8 will be strictly enforced,
so watch the clock! The rule says: "If competitors
are late for their start through their own fault, they shall be started as
soon as practically possible. The actual time of their start shall be noted
on their map, or on a start list at the start location. Their time will still
be computed, however, from their original start time
given in the official start list." The only start-time changes that will
be allowed are for event workers whose duties prevented them from reaching
the Start in time.
So remember, if you miss your start time, you will be started as soon as you
arrive, but your time will be calculated from your
assigned start time.
Please plan ahead and give yourself enough time to get to the Start in a
timely fashion.
Warming up: On Day 1, you must remain on the dirt road until after
you start your course. On Day 2, you may warm up on the trail or road
leading to the Start and in the designated area near the Start assembly
area.
Clothing return: Warm-up clothes only will be transported back
to the Event Center. Please
do not bring backpacks or other heavy objects to the Start that you do not
intend to carry with you on the course. Water will be available at the
Start.
Toilets will be available in the parking area, near the Event Center, and
at the junction of Hwy 28 and the dirt road on Day 1, and at the Tahoe
Summit trailhead at Hwy 50 on Day 2.
Finish Areas
There will be two Finish areas each day: one for competitive orienteers, and one
for recreational participants.
Day 1: Competitive Finish is 100 meters west of the park entrance road, and about
400 meters from the Event Center. Recreational Finish is near the Silver Start,
and about 400 meters from the Event Center.
Day 2: The Finish areas are near each other (100 meters apart) and
about 250 meters from the Event Center.
When you finish, you must turn in your punch card. Maps also will be collected
until the last competitors have started their courses, which will be
about 12:30 pm on Saturday and 11:30 pm on Sunday. Maps may be reclaimed at
the Event Center.
Results & Awards
Results will be posted as quickly as possible each day at the Event Center.
The awards ceremony will take place at 2:00 pm Sunday at the Event Center.
