Lafayette Reserve, Lafayette

Wednesday, June 23, 1999 (Practice Session)

This East Bay practice session will be held at the Lafayette Reservoir in Lafayette. I haven't definitely decided the format, but it will probably be a mass-start, 45- to 60-minute Score-O beginning at 6:00 PM.

The Lafayette Reservoir is a bowl with relatively steep sides and a big lake in the middle. There is a trail that goes around the lake, and one around the rim, with multiple radial trails connecting the two. The area is predominantly grassland mixed with fight, but there are a few runnable areas of forest present.

However, since we will be using a modified USGS map, blown up to 1:10000, and the vegetation is not well mapped, most of the running will be on the trails. This will be a good physical workout, requiring a lot of hill running, but it also will give you practice reading the map while on the move, and deciding the best route to collect the controls. Navigational difficulty will probably be mainly Yellow, with some intermediate-level controls.

After the run, we will adjourn to the Round Table Pizza joint for some suds and pizza.

Directions

From Route 24 in the East Bay heading east, take the Acalanes Road exit. Continue straight at the signal at the end of the exit ramp, and you will be on Mt. Diablo Blvd. Continue for about a mile, and the entrance to the park is on the right. Drive to the parking lot at the top of the dam. Bring some quarters to feed the parking meter. We will meet at the west end of the parking lot.
