Joaquin Miller, Oakland

Sunday, June 6, 1999

This BAOC event will feature standard courses for beginners and intermediates. The White course with pre-marked maps will be a repeat from the Bay Area Backroads meet last year. Yellow and Orange will probably use master maps.

There will be an advanced course which will take you once again onto the "Dark Side" of the map. Not recommended for most Brown and Green regulars, it will be reminiscent of the dreaded Redwood Revenge of '92. Like some adventure races: poor map and physically ridiculous. Slopes are steep, vegetation is thick and the map leaves much to be desired particularly in terms of contours and vegetation. Not so much a matter of skill or endurance (I will keep it fairly short) but expect some good strength training and a reminder of the value of accurate and fair maps. You will have some route choice problems and I will add map corrections as time allows. I also hope to have a limited number of the advanced course maps pre-marked.

The terrain and map quality will be better for the other courses. The White, Yellow, and much of the Orange will utilize the upper-elevation area of the park. The terrain here is mostly gentle, with attractive and runnable redwoods. The Orange course will be challenging, with the aim of providing a better orienteering alternative to the Dark Side.

Poison oak will be prevalent on parts of the Orange and advanced courses.

E-mail me to reserve a pre-marked map.

Directions

All starts and finishes will be at the assembly/registration area at Redwood Glen picnic site. This is the same location as the Line-O and Backroads events of last year. It can be reached from Highway 13 (Warren Freeway), by taking Joaquin Miller Road east. Turn left onto Skyline Blvd. Follow the signs to the turnoff (limited parking) on Skyline Drive or park (for a fee) at Roberts Area.
