Practice Session at
Coyote Hills, Fremont

Wednesday, May 12, 1999

Note that this event is a practice seesion, and unlike our regular events, no beginner instruction or courses will be offered.

Wednesday Evening Practice, 5:45-6:15pm starts.

Come enjoy a nice evening hike or run at the centrally located Coyote Hills Regional Park in Fremont. Like last year, I will set a streamered course following the same route as the Score O'/Long Orange. Please bring a pen or pencil. You may want to bring your map from the March event, if you have it, just in case I run out of fresh maps. The full course will be about 6 km with 250m climb; you can do the whole course, or shortcut and just do a part of it.

For those people who are interested, I will try to set up a mass start at about 6:15pm. (A mass start is probably the best way to practice your speed in terrain. Several prominent orienteers have suggested that the scarcity of mass-start events in the US is part of the reason for the lack of really fast US orienteers.)

DIRECTIONS: Coyote Hills is conveniently located just north of the east end of the Dumbarton Bridge in Fremont.

From 880 in Fremont, exit at Decoto Rd. (a.k.a. 84 West) and go west onto the freeway that leads to the Dumbarton Bridge. AFTER you are on highway 84 on your way to the Dumbarton Bridge, about 2 miles west from 880, exit at the Thornton Avenue & Paseo Padre exit, and turn right (North) on Paseo Padre. (Note that both Paseo Padre and Thornton also cross 880, but you don't want to exit at either of these.) After about 1 mile, turn left at the entrance to Coyote Hills Regional Park and park in the dirt lot just as you get to the hills.)

From the Peninsula, take 84 east to the Dumbarton Bridge. After you have crossed the bridge and passed the toll plaza, you should take the first exit, which is at Thornton Avenue & Paseo Padre. Turn left (North) on Paseo Padre and proceed about 1 mile, turning left at the entrance to Coyote Hills Regional Park. Park in the dirt lot just as you get to the hills.

PARKING: $3.50 IF the entrance booth is staffed. Free if not.

EVENT COST: $1

REGISTRATION: from 5:30pm to 6pm

STARTS: From 5:45pm to 6:15pm
