Lake Elizabeth, Fremont

Saturday, May 8, 1999

White 3.6 km, 10 m climb, 8 Controls
Yellow 4.1 km, 12 m climb, 9 Controls
Score-O, 60 minute limit

Come and enjoy the new map of Lake Elizabeth in Fremont! The map was field checked and drafted by Wyatt Riley and is centrally located in the Bay Area. The map includes a large City Park and some streets nearby in the quiet, pretty Mission district. The terrain is open and very fast (unlike the rest of Bay Area, there are no hills). It is a great place to introduce people to orienteering. Two courses will be offered at the beginner level:

White 3.6 km, 10 m climb, 8 Controls
Yellow 4.1 km, 12 m climb, 9 Controls

There are will also be a score-O with mostly White/Yellow level controls, and it will be long enough that I don't expect anyone to get them all in under an hour. All maps are premarked; no drawing circles in the wrong location. There will be no markers at the controls. You will get the piece of paper with your controls numbers, descriptions and questions you will have to answer after arriving at each control. The questions will be based on the objects in your control circle. For instance, what is the light pole #_____. You will have to write down the correct number on your sheet copying from the correct light pole. Each control will be worth 10 points, each wrong answer will not count toward your total score. Be careful writing numbers down and don't forget to bring a pencil to the event. We may have some, but it is possible that we will run out.

There are lots of picnic tables around the lake. Bring your lunch or snack; you may want to stay afterwards and enjoy the Lake.

DIRECTIONS:  From I-880 South or North in Fremont, take Stevenson Blvd. east (toward the hills) and go about 2 miles to Paseo Padre. Turn right and follow orienteering signs to park near the swimming area.
