Sunol, Sunol

April 11, 1999

Our annual Sunol event will be held Sunday April 11th. We will use our 1991 five color 1:15000 map by George Kirkov. Although this map is not yet on O-CAD it is still one of our most detailed and accurate maps.  Sunol Regional Park is relatively open with many interesting rock features. The terrain is quite steep and the advanced courses (except for Brown) will be physically demanding. If you have slacked off on physical conditioning this winter, drop down a level for this meet!

This year George Kirkov has volunteered to design the advanced courses.  I’m hoping he’ll provide an innovative approach to course setting in the steep Sunol terrain. Setting a technically challenging course that isn’t physically overwhelming has always been a difficult task for Sunol course setters and I welcome George’s expertise in this area.

We plan to have four advanced courses (Brown, Green, Red, and Blue) as well as White, Yellow and Orange for novice through intermediate orienteers. There will be a remote start for the advanced courses.  Plan on a 20-30 minute hike (uphill) to reduce the amount of climb on the courses for Brown through Blue. Registration opens at 9 AM with start times from 10 AM to 12:30 PM. Beginners clinics are planned for 9:30 and 10:30. Help from advanced orienteers who cannot attend this meet but would be interested in vetting or pre-running courses is welcomed.

To get to the park, take I-680 to the Calaveras Road exit near Sunol.  Go south on Calaveras Road about six miles to Geary Road. Turn left onto Geary an continue for a couple of miles to the park entrance. Pay the parking fee and follow the O-signs to the registration area.
