Coyote Hills, Fremont

March 21, 1999

Come out and enjoy this spring's Coyote Hills orienteering event.  White, Yellow courses will be held for beginners, Orange, Long Orange & a Score O' course for intermediates and Memory Score O' for those who still want a major challenge in this relatively easy terrain.

The orienteering map of Coyote Hills is relatively new (circa 1998) and has been updated for this years event.   The park is located right on the Bay with views (on clear days) of San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose. The area includes several large mostly open hills and some interesting rock features and has very little (easy-to-avoid) poison oak.  This winter's controlled burn cleared vegetation such that in mid-February it had only grown back to ~6 inches high, providing relatively fast orienteering conditions.

As usual, registration will be open from 9:00am to noon; beginner's instruction will be offered on request from 9:30am to 10:30am; and start times are available between 10:00am to 12:30pm.  All participants must check in at the finish by 2:00pm, whether or not they have finished their course.

Course Details

March 14th update: By popular demand, a Long Orange course has been added this year, with the same length as the Score O', without the difficulty of a time limit & planning your own order.

Directions

Coyote Hills is conveniently located just north of the east end of the Dumbarton Bridge in Fremont.

From 880 in Fremont, exit at Decoto Rd. (a.k.a. 84 West) and go west onto the freeway that leads to the Dumbarton Bridge. AFTER you are on highway 84 on your way to the Dumbarton Bridge, about 2 miles west from 880, exit at the Thornton Avenue & Paseo Padre exit, and turn right (North) on Paseo Padre. (Note the both Paseo Padre and Thornton also cross 880, but you don't want to exit at either of these.) After about 1 mile, turn left at the entrance to Coyote Hills Regional Park and follow orienteering signs.

From the Peninsula, take 84 east to the Dumbarton Bridge. After you have crossed the bridge and passed the toll plaza, you should take the first exit, which is at Thornton Avenue & Paseo Padre. Turn left (North) on Paseo Padre and proceed about 1 mile, turning left at the entrance to Coyote Hills Regional Park. Look for orienteering signs.

Note the park charges $3.50 per car for parking.
