Annual BAOC Orienteering Festival at Stanford University Day and Night Orienteering and Pot Luck
GET READY FOR ALL SORTS OF ORIENTEERING FUN at Stanford University. You'll be orienteering on various courses throughout the day and night using a NEWLY REVISED map of the campus. There will be all sorts of clinics to attend, puzzles to work on, games to play, and of course the evening-long SOCIAL complete with a potluck, the BAOC Service Award, and various presentations.
THE COURSES will be split between daytime and evening. During the day there will be a special trail-O designed by Dwight Freund plus the usual start-O, white, yellow, orange, and green courses. Throughout the day you can try your hand at the photo-O (our only indoor course for the day). At night, you can choose between two night score-O: one in the more lit areas of campus and the other in further (darker) reaches of the campus. Yes, we'll have a signup sheet for people who prefer orienteering with partners (recommended for anybody who prefers not to orienteer alone at night).
THE CLINICS include
BEGINNERS CLINIC (Various instructors) Learn the sport, its rules, and how to use a map. It's easy. Recommended for all new orienteers.
MAP MAKING (Bob Cooley?) Learn to field check and draw orienteering maps. Apply these skills to develop orienteering maps of city or wilderness parks. Recommended for intermediate and advanced orienteers.
MAP MAKING FOR KIDS (Nick Corsano) Learn how to make your own orienteering maps as one teenager already did at Bay Front Park in Menlo Park. It's a fun way to become better at orienteering. Recommended for children aged 10 and older.
INTERMEDIATE SKILLS (Evan Custer) Learn the skills you need to become an advanced orienteer. Even if you remain an intermediate orienteer, these skills will help you enjoy the sport more than you ever enjoyed it before. Recommended for advanced-beginner and intermediate orienteers.
EVENT DIRECTOR'S WORKSHOP (Scott Aster) Learn how to direct an orienteering event using tips and tools already developed by past event directors. Recommended for intermediate and advanced orienteers.
THE SOCIAL begins when the night score-O ends. Bring a special dish of food and try as many dishes of food as you're up to trying. It's a time to relax and reflect on the night-O or on the past year. There will be a presentation of the BAOC Service Award, a course review of the A-meet courses given by participants, videos if people have them, a few orienteering songs, and lots of talking about the fun we've had during the past year.
