Joaquin Miller, Oakland
June 28, 1998

THE COURSES: The 1998 Joaquin Miller meet will feature two line-O courses for advanced runners as well as standard White and Yellow.

LINE-O is a training variant of orienteering where the control locations are not indicated by the usual circles but are somewhere along a line shown on the map. This course will afford practice in precision map reading, running in varied terrain and visit areas not easily used for standard courses. The long line-O will have a design time of about 50  minutes and a shorter version about 30 minutes.

TERRAIN AND MAP: Some of the area of the line courses will be relatively fresh but some will be very familiar to many, the area of the permanent course. Another factor to keep in mind, particularly if you will be new to the area, is that in addition to the familiarity factor, the JMP/Redwood map is somewhat incomplete, inaccurate and inconsistent by orienteering standards. Nevertheless, the courses attempt to make the best use of the map and the terrain which is superb in plaes. Poison oak exists but is not extensive.

You can reserve via e-mail, telephone or regular mail to joedscarcrl.com or 3015 Holyrood Dr., Oakland, CA 94611 by June 25. If you do not reserve, there will be a master map category with results posted as a separate course.

TO GET TO THE MEET: from Highway 13 in Oakland head east on Joaquin Miller Road about 1.5 miles, turn left on Skyline for about one mile to Roberts Recreation Area on the right. Ample parking will be available at Roberts ($3.50.) Limited parking is possible in turnouts along Skyline. The route to registration will be streamered. The start and finish will be adjacent to the registration area. Swimming will be available at the Roberts pool for $2.50, $1.50 for kids. See you there.
