Intermediate Orienteering Classroom Workshop
Oakland
June 9, 1998

In response to the membership survey indicating that members want to have more training and educational sessions, we are planning on holding two intermediate workshops per year, one in the East Bay, and one in the South Bay. This year's East Bay session will be Tuesday evening, June 9th at 7:00 p.m. at the Alta Imaging Conference Room, 5730 Telegraph Avenue, Oakland.

The workshop is aimed at advanced beginner and intermediate orienteers who want to learn some more techniques to improve their orienteering skills. Some of the items which will be covered (time permitting) include map reading, compass techniques, map simplification, route selection, running a route, error prevention and correction, and start and finish. I will use a video and overhead projections to help demonstrate some of the points. There will be a $2.00 charge for purchase of a map to be used for route choice discussion.

There are a number of good books out about orienteering, but the one I found to be most helpful is Orienteering, Skills and Strategies, by Ron Lowry and Ken Sidney. If possible, I would recommend that you read it before the session. It probably can be obtained from our two local orienteering vendors, Joe Scarborough's Scarborough Orienteering, joedscarcrl.com 510-530-3059, and Bruce Wolfe's Orienteer California, wolfes-orienteercaliforniaworldnet.att.com, 510-428-0701. The two national O vendors, Berman's Orienteering Supply, onaworld.std.com, 617-858-7416, and A& E Orienteering, A_E_Orienteeringcompuserve.com, http://www.us.orienteering.org/commercial/AEO.html, 314-872-3165, probably also carry it.

There will be pizza available at 6:30 p.m. The workshop will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will probably last 2 to 3 hours. The workshop will take place at the Imaging Center of Alta Bates Medical Center at 5730 Telegraph Avenue at the corner of 58th Street in Oakland. (Note, this is not at the main hospital of Alta Bates Medical Center in Berkeley.) From the west or south, take Route 24 and exit at 51st Street in Oakland. Turn right onto 51st Street at the  end of the exit ramp. At the second signal, turn left onto Telegraph Avenue. Continue about 0.5 miles and the Imaging Center is on your right. From the east, take Route 24 and exit at Telegraph Avenue, turn right and go 3 blocks. The Imaging Center is on your right. From the north, take I-80 and exit at Ashby Avenue. Go for about 4 miles, and turn right onto Telegraph. Go for about 1 mile, and the Imaging Center is on your left.
