Point Pinole, Pinole
February 22, 1998

Hey, beginning and intermediate orienteers! (and maybe some advanced people, too!) Would you like to go orienteering at an area that is:

(1) Flat? The map has 2.5 meter contours, and not that many of them in most places.
(2) Open? About 75% of the map is rough open land, with excellent visibility.
(3) Easy to run? There isn't a single boulder feature on the entire map.
(4) Scenic? There are great views of SF Bay from just about everywhere.
(5) Historically interesting? The area used to be a munitions factory, and there are interesting man-made features everywhere.

If you find this description attractive, be sure to attend our second event at Point Pinole. I tentatively plan to set White, Yellow, Orange, and "Long Orange" courses at the meet.

To get to Point Pinole, take the Hilltop Drive exit off Interstate 80 in Richmond. Go west 1.5 miles on Hilltop Drive until it ends at San Pablo Ave. Turn right on San Pablo Ave. and go north 0.3 miles to Richmond Parkway. Turn left on Richmond Parkway and in 0.2 miles turn right onto Atlas Rd. Continue on Atlas Rd. for 1.4 miles past the railroad tracks and the detention center--the park entrance will be on your right. You will probably have to pay some unknown amount to park your car. See you there!
