It's January and that means it's Ski-O season again! Thanks to some very productive storms last month the snow conditions right now are just about perfect. Join us at Tahoe XC (aka Burton Creek State Park) for the first Ski-O in this year's lineup. Note that this event will be on a SATURDAY! Tahoe XC features 65km of groomed ski trails, a nice day lodge with cafe, as well as ski and snowshoe rentals, all for much less than the price of a downhill ticket. And if one day of skiing isn't enough you can stick around for the Alpenglow Freestyle 20km Race the following day (see www.tahoexc.org for more details).

The preliminary course stats are as follows:

Course Length(1) Length(2) Climb(2) Map Difficulty
White 2.8 km 3.1 km 35 m 1:10K Beginner
Yellow 4.0 km 4.8 km 60 m 1:10K Beginner
Orange 6.1 km 7.6 km 100 m 1:15K Intermediate
Green 10.8 km 16.0 km 250 m 1:15K Advanced
Blue 14.8 km 22.4 km 360 m 1:15K Advanced

(1) Calculated as straight-line point-to-point distance between
controls.
(2) Calculated along the optimum route using mapped trails.
All courses will use E-punch (you can rent a stick or bring your own). Registration opens at 9am. Starts are from 10am to 12:30pm. There will be free beginner's clinics as needed between 9am and noon. COURSES CLOSE AT 2pm - make sure you allow enough time to finish your course! We need to get everyone back in time so we can pick up controls and pack up before it gets dark!

The orienteering entry fees are $6 for beginner's courses (white & yellow) and $8 for all other courses. Second course, additional maps (for groups) and E-punch rental are all $2. Youths (8-20) receive a 50% discount, and children under 8 go free. You have to get a separate trail pass from Tahoe XC in order to ski (or snowshoe) the trails! Register for the orienteering first to receive a discount coupon for $4 off the regular trail pass fee (normally $18).

Directions

Burton Creek is on the northwest side of Lake Tahoe in the Sierras. To get there, take Highway 80 to Truckee. Exit at Hwy 89 and drive south to Tahoe City. At the Y intersection continue north (straight) on Hwy 28 (North Lake Boulevard). After about 2.5 miles turn left on Fabian Way (opposite the 7-11 store). Make an immediate right onto Village Road and follow it up the hill and as it veers to the right. At the end of Village Road turn left onto Country Club Drive. Park in the Tahoe XC parking lot on your left.

If driving from Reno you can also exit I-80 at Hwy 267. Take 267 south to Kings Beach and turn right on 28 (North Lake Blvd). Drive 6.5 miles to Fabian Way and follow the directions above.
