Mid-week practice session

Contact: Thorsten Graeve, 408-293-1718

Tonight's practice session will be at Shoreline Park in Mountain View. Hopefully there'll be some cool evening breezes coming in from the Bay to keep things pleasant.

I'm planning to set up two courses: a short (2.75 km) sprint course in the standard point-to-point format (using the 1:5000 scale map of the western half of the park) and a longer (5.1 km) line-O that covers the entire park (at 1:7500). You can pick either one or both courses.

Since this is essentially a navigation excercise - fast navigation for the short course; accurate navigation for the line-O - the maps will be printed without any of the trails (otherwise it would be too easy). If you're not comfortable orienteering on a trail-less map, don't worry. I'll make sure to have a few copies of the regular map at hand as well.

I would appreciate an E-mail from anyone planning to attend so I can reserve a pre-printed map for you.

Starts will be between 6 and 7 pm at the Boathouse at the end of Shoreline Drive, or in the grassy area just north of there (depending on where I'll find an empty bench). You can start after 7 pm, but I'll only be there until 7:30 or 8 pm to record your results. If you want to start after 7:30 pm, let me know and I'll put you down for control pickup.

Bring $1 for the map, your compass and a pen. Running shoes and shorts are appropriate (no gaiters). The entire event is on trails, although for the sprint you may want to short-cut through some of the grassy areas.

After the event we'll head to a local eatery for some food and refreshment.

Directions

To get to Shoreline Park, take the Shoreline Blvd. exit from 101 in Mountain View. Go north on Shoreline Blvd, past the Amphitheater and the park entrance kiosk. Continue on Shoreline Drive as it swings around the golf course and past the club house. Park it the parking lot all the way at the end. The boathouse is at the west end of the parking lot by the lake.
