More than 650 folks turned out this year, including 450+ scouts and about 194 BAOC participants - WAY more than we had planned for, but very exciting to see. Below are results for both the BAOC event and the 8th Annual Bay Area Scout Orienteering Championships.
We would like to thank the East Bay Regional Park District and the Briones Park rangers for their support. The scouts would like to thank BAOC for sponsoring the Scout-O event and helping scouting out. Thanks also to all the parents and scout leaders who took the time to bring their scouts to a day of orienteering.
I'm aware of three course mistakes: It was a very hot day, and despite having 220+ pounds of water on the course, it wasn't enough. One control number was mislabeled on the scout adult course clue sheets, which affected the adult scout runs. And the second-to-last circle on the Green map was misplaced, which affected George Minarik before it was corrected. Sorry!

Sandra, James, Jonathan, and Joshua Mangrum won a rather long White course in 66:45. Nelson Ahlstrom beat Tim Montgomery and Sandra Mangrum by 7 seconds to get second place. The Yellow course was won by Brian Richardson in 53:41, with Aimee Grimes in second. Jordan Boye of Troop 5 won the Orange course in style in 57:19, followed by Marc Rice and Vanessa Hemingway.
The technically advanced courses all went through the heavily forested area west of the main North-South trail. On Brown, Caleb Emmons in 56:29 managed a win over the indomitable Harold DeMoss, followed by Evan Custer who appears to be recovering nicely from his injured knee. On Green, Ian Ramsey won in 74 minutes, while Penny DeMoss - also recovering nicely from her Achilles injury - was second. Steve Smith was in third.
Kent Ohlund was able to win the Red course in 84:39, despite first going out on the Orange. Tapio Karras was second, and Susanne Wallenborg was third. On the Blue course, Staffan Jacobsson ran a very fast 79:30, with James Scarborough in second and Rick Oliver in third.

The competition was organized in two parts:
The undisputed, repeat Bay Area Scout Orienteering Champion is Jordan Boye from Troop 5 in Palo Alto, who won Course 4, the Orange course, in 57:19. His time also puts him in first place amongst the regular BAOC orienteers! Orville Hrabe of Troop 912 in Sunol was second, and Danny Lazzareschi was third.
Everett Robinson and Malcolm Wyatt-Mair of Troop 241 were the winners on a rather long Course 1 in just 42:43, also good enough for first place in the BAOC competition. RJ Shippey, JP Viera, and JC Rodenburg, also of Troop 241, chased them in, and Nate, Bernie Leslie, Chris, Charlie, and Cody of Pack 200 came in third.
Course 2 was won by B Taylor, A Scott and C Metcalf of Troop 33 in just 48:56, which would have earned them first place on the regular BAOC course. Troop 87's team of Anna Reichardt and Marie Maffei were second, while Sara Terman, Danielle Sheehan, Melissa William, and Scott William of Troop 27 came in third.
Course 3, which is between Yellow and Orange in difficulty, was won by Danny Aden and Sean Williams of Troop 27 in 42:32 (faaasst!). David Moore and Jason Green of Troop 237 came second, and Sean Cline and Mark Catlin of Troop 139 were third.
Bob Scamman of Troop 975 collared top honors on the Adult course, which was pretty tough. Greg Butera of Troop 24 ran a good second, and Tim Rau of Troop 975 was third. Since this was for bragging rights only, Bob gets to be the biggest bragger - well done! (I must apologize here for a misnumbered control on the adult course, which caused some consternation and delays. Sorry!)
