More than 50 BAOC members road-tripped south for LAOC's first-ever A-meet, held at Mt. Pinos (8,800 feet) in the Los Padres National Forest (southwest of the Grapevine off I-5). Meet Director Clare Durand and the Los Angeles O Club put on an excellent event - congrats! We hope our fellow Cali-Os will put on more A-meets in the future, so we don't have to travel so far to attend USOF ranking events.
Below are the complete results. You also can view them - plus the recreational finishes - on LAOC's website.
The weather was wonderful and the terrain excellent - open, runnable forests (except for "croquet wickets" that tripped the unwary) that are the envy of other Western clubs. Overall, the courses were quite good - technically challenging (unlike the Bay Area) as well as physical (fairly long, and Day 2 Red finished with a 12-contour climb in the thin mountain air).
A minor downside was the Mt. Pinos map - "The contours are mostly correct...everything else is suspect" said the mapper's notes. Not exactly reassuring, but in fact - despite anomalies with rock features, clearings, and disappearing trails - few people had real problems (due to map quality, anyway). However, many people did run off the maps both days, a risky proposition caused by the placement of courses close to the printed edges of the maps.
As expected, BAOC did quite well in the final 2-day standings, and there were some exciting races and unexpected twists, including a 1-second win and a family sweep (both featuring the same BAOCer - can you guess who?).
Panu Haaramo won M21 Blue on the strength of his Day 1 performance. Wyatt Riley, a close second on Day 1, was affected by the altitude and dropped to Brown on Day 2 (where he demolished the field in 33:10). In all, BAOCers comprised 7 of the 13 ranked Blue competitors.
On Red, Angelica Riley took the F21 class, also benefitting from her Day 1 run (the always-amazing Sharon Crawford of RMOC, age 55, beat her on Day 2). M35 featured a clean sweep by BAOC, led by Tapio Karras, who leapfrogged from 3rd to 1st on Day 2, besting Neal Barlow and Ken Vomaske. Dan Greene, only seconds behind Matthias Kohler on Day 1, won M40 handily when Matthias ran off the map on Day 2 and DNF'd. Alan Glendinning finished third. (Many runners shared Matthias' fate on both days. LAOC should consider printing more of the map beyond the areas covered by the courses.) On M45, Mark Blair finished a respectable third, ahead of Gavin Wyatt-Mair, who lost his control card part-way through Day 2 - and ran back several controls to find it! Steve Jankowski (a theoretical Blue runner) took M-Red, although he was bested on Day 2 by Eric Rosenzweig, a relatively new BAOC orienteer.
The closest races were in Green. On M50, Gary Carpenter had a superb Day 1 run, putting him comfortably in front of friendly rivals Dennis Wildfogel and George Minarik. But Dennis streaked through the Day 2 course at the head of the field - and finished ONE second ahead of Gary in the final standings! On M55, Bob Cooley finished Day 1 in a tie with Ingvard Jakobsen of LAOC, and wound up 2nd after giving up all of 33 seconds on Day 2. Joe Scarborough was 2nd in M60, and Eric Andersen and Steve Beuerman were 2nd and 3rd, respectively, on M-Green.
On the female side of Green, the competition was a bit meager. Stacy Goss took F35 and Aileen Abernathy F40, both the only 2-day participants in their classes. Stacy ran a great course on Day 1, and Aileen overcame severe blisters to turn in one of the better women's runs on Day 2. Leslie Minarik won F45, and Marsha Jacobs accepted the F50 baseball cap (our prizes).
F-Brown featured another friendly rivalry: Meg Gerstner and Louise Madrid. Meg finished Day 1 nearly 16 minutes ahead of Louise, then saw her lead evaporate on Day 2 when she ran into problems and Louise turned in the best performance of her career - even beating top Brown competitor Donna Gookin of SDO! (Louise claims she did well because she finally asked husband Dennis Wildfogel how to take bearings with the compass. Hmmm...) On M-Brown, Evan Custer had the best Day 1 time, but hampered by a knee injury, he opted out on Day 2. On Yellow, our favorite couple, Ev and Jean Beuerman, won the Group category.
On White, up-and-coming juniors Rachel Care and Malcolm Wyatt-Mair topped the F10 and M10 categories, respectively. Rachel's win rounded out the family award sweep started by Dennis and Louise. She had the fastest Day 1 time on White (Malcolm was fastest on Day 2), and Rachel's Day 2 run created some unexpected drama when her "shadow," Olivia Graeve, sprained her ankle near control 2 and had to be rescued with a stretcher. Rachel, who aborted her course to report Olivia's injury, received another start time, and ran so fast that her new shadow, mom Louise, had trouble keeping up!
Congratulations to all the finishers, and thanks again to LAOC for a great weekend of orienteering.
