Another beautiful day of the California spring brought 63 people to the Fremont Central Park for the Lake Elizabeth orienteering event. Easy navigation and flat terrain were perfect for the beginners. A lot of controls, fast thinking, and fast running were good practice for the advanced people.
White and Yellow courses were about the same difficulty, with the Yellow course about 0.5 km longer. We got a few first-time orienteers on the White and Yellow courses, and some of them showed fantastic times. For instance, the Mourtos family took second place on the White course, and Pat & Pat O'Brien (M83 & F75) finished their first ever orienteering on the White course in 75 minutes. Good times were shown on the 4.1-km Yellow course. Russell Green finished in 29:39, and Aimee Grimes was the first women and second over all on the Yellow course with the time 36:30. Greg Morgan was third at 41:46.
Very fast times were shown by the Score-O orienteers as well. Twenty-six people participated in the Score-O. Eight of them got all 27 controls, but only four orienteers were within the time limit (60 min) with the highest score of 270: Neal Barlow took the first place, followed by Dough Stain, and Syd Reader. Steve Gregg sprinted into 4th with 0 seconds to spare, finishing at 60 minutes exactly.
The top three finishers were awarded with certificates of achievement, a document especially designed for this event with the name of the top finisher, course and place. For people who didn't get their awards, I will be handing them out at the next couple of orienteering meets and training events.
And at the end I want to thank people who helped with setting up the event: registration, starts, finishes.
