We had a great day and O-meeting at Doton's Point or, rather, Granite Bay State Park, in beautiful weather. As usual the area was quite a challenge to very good orienteers as well as to the beginners and less experienced. As you may know, the area is incredibly well-featured with many land forms, rocks and boulders, water and marsh, vegetation, man-made features, and possibly other control features represented in abundance. If one wanted to put on a textbook "O", Doton's would be a good choice. (Yes, there is also some poison oak, but manageable.) Check out the results.
We set five courses: a relatively short Red, an average Green, Orange, Yellow, and White. At least for GCO meets at Doton's Point, the attendance was a record high, despite the competition from BAOC's annual meeting. As usual, many of the White finishers graduated to Yellow, and some Yellow graduated to Orange.
As to the courses, there was only one control that caused some time-consuming agony for some of the participants on the Green (#5) and the Red (#6) course. A small knoll, which indeed could be about 20 meters too much to the east on the map, gave some runners some grief. (However, the coursesetter, Tom Jahn, had found it so easily, and felt that with the nearby other features so identifiable, it shouldn't be too difficult to find, particularly since the control was hung quite visibly). One of the Green runners, Joe Ledesma, got so excited when he found it (#5) that he proceeded directly to #7, skipping #6, and didn't discover it until he finished. Well, that happens in orienteering!
GCO's Swede, Martin Bergstrand, won the Red at 81.02, followed by BAOC's Finn, Panu Haaramo, at 88.03. Two Swedish young ladies, Frida Larson and Anna-Karin Palm, edged GCO's Dan Clark for third.
Good old Dwight Freund dominated the Green ahead of BAOC's National Champ, Joan Roos.
GCO's Jim Michaels did so well on the Orange course that he may found it necessary to graduate to Green from now on. This may also apply to the second finisher, Art Livingston, and the scouts of team Pyro/Werner.
BAOC's Anu Perasalo won the Yellow at the excellent time of 65.22, and she should graduate to Orange. This goes also for the second-placers, the ROTC team of Dent, Kramer, Larson and Fricane, In fact, this team went on to Orange and finished fourth. There were many ROTC and scout teams that did well on the Yellow course, and many of them should be ready for Orange competition.
As mentioned many White finishers went on also to run the Yellow course with great enthusiasm. Heart-warming for an old orienteer!
Finally, Tom regrets to advise that you will not have to suffer his red/green/orange courses for awhile at Doton's. He will return to New Hampshire (and NEOC) at least for two years. Instead, most likely, Dwight Freund and Jim Michaels will take over future meets, and knowing Dwight, the upper courses will not be easier.
