A break in the winter brought out a large crowd to our annual Indian Valley event. Although the weather was of a halcyon quality, the competition was decidedly fierce. Most courses saw the majority of the finish times grouped within minutes of each other. Dan Stoll-Hadayia commented that BAOC has the most competitive orienteering scene in the country, a fact that is hard to dispute. Check out the results and splits below.
The Blue, Red, and Green courses ventured into a previously unused southeast portion of the map. Getting there entailed quite a bit of climb and the courses were shortened to compensate for it. Even with the steepness, the winners of each course were below my estimated winning times. German tourist Eric Roller demonstrated the high level of European orienteering by defeating our best, James Scarborough, on Blue. Neeme Loorits moved down to win the Red. A very fast time by Angelica Riley took the women's Red race. Christian Froyd destroyed the Green course in 41 minutes.
Joe Papendick was the first junior male and Sarah Minarik the first junior female on Green. Aileen Abernathy continued her marked improvement and had a swift run as the first woman on Green. Dennis Wildfogel moved down and led the Brown finishers. Annaliese Steuben had a great run as the first woman and junior on Brown. Mark Rice took the Orange course, Evan Custer the Yellow, and Mark Howat blazed through the White. Shannon and Lillian Wang were the leaders of the Start-O.
The success of the event must be attributed to the large and hard-working meet crew. I will try to list them below, but I know I will miss some people and for that I apologize.
A big thanks to Ev and Jean Beuerman who drove out to find a photocopy machine to copy more control descriptions.

from Steve Gregg OK, here they are - everyone who recorded splits on the Blue or Red split boards at Indian Valley, plus Kent's splits. I could include some Green splits here too, since I'm sure there were many common controls, but I don't know for sure which ones were shared. I really think this was the best B-meet we have had since I joined the club in 1992. Sensational weather, unbelievable competition on the Blue course (once again, my slow map-copying time cost me five places in the standings :-(), and a very nice social atmosphere after the event. This route involved relatively little climbing but judging from the splits, was slower than taking a more direct route (the contouring was pretty slow on the steep hillsides). 11-12 Forgot how steep those little ditches are! Tried to go straight but upon encountering the first man-eating ditch (and seeing two more to cross before the bag), bailed back out to the road and circled around by the building to the north. Lost a minute or so. 16-17 Ran all the way around the N side of the hill and circled back around to the bag. Good running all the way. Since my split was almost identical to Kent's, I'll assume these two routes were equivalent.
