Congratulations to all those who attended the Emerald Hills Street-O on January 10th. You not only ran one or more fun courses for some exercise and orienteering practice, you participated during the all-time best weather we have ever experienced at Emerald Hills. The skies were sunny and the temperature was just slightly cool - perfect running weather! We had a good turnout, and many adventurous people came to try their hand at orienteering for the first time.
Three courses were offered: White, Yellow, and Score-O.
Chad McDonald and Soren Curry blitzed the White course in only 15:08. They'd better run a higher level course at their next BAOC outing! Second and third places on the White were hotly contested - Maya and Bo Curry (17:50) sneaked by the team of Kelly, Scot, Sean Eagleton and Andrew Theiss (17:55) by only 5 seconds.
On the Yellow, newcomer(?) Greg Frediani bested the field of 20 entrants with a time of 29:48, while Geoff, Andrew, & Al Theiss (31:14) followed in 2nd place, and Alan & Erica Denison (33:46) took third.
Rules for the Score-O proved slightly overwhelming for some. There were 2 classifications: 50 minutes and 90 minutes. While there were probably more attempts in the short Score-O than appear in the results, many who tried for the 50 minute cutoff went so far beyond the time limit that they were scored in the long Score-O group, sending their scores into the positive.
The Score-O was segmented into 3 areas on the map, with 7 controls in each area. If you completed all 7 questions in any area correctly, you got a bonus point for the area. (Admittedly, this was bribery to get more advanced runners to the outskirts early.) In each area was a "special" control. 2 points were awarded for the special controls, and 1 point for each regular control. So the total number of points available was 27.
On the 50 minute Score-O, Meg Gerstner was first. Her time of 50:58 brought her a penaly point, but her bonus point cancelled that out, leaving her with 8 points. Judy Koehler was second with a time of 43:36 and 5 points.
On the 90 minute Score-O, 3 runners reached all the controls within the 90 minute limit and received all 27 points. Their finish order was: 1. Neal Barlow (82:57), 2. Wyatt Riley (86:50), and 3. Steve Gregg (87:38). Way to Go!! The first female was Angelica Riley (85:48) with 18 points.
