UC Berkeley Results

Below are the complete results.

About 110 orienteers came to the meet at the UC Berkeley campus and ran the four courses: white, yellow, short and long window-O. As usual in September, it was a nice sunny day. Many novice runners attended the meet because of great publicity, compliments of Joan Roos and others. The most difficult thing for the many people was that no control bags were used because of high traffic in the campus. Many people picked incorrect neighboring light poles because the poles had very similar numbers! The idea of campus Window-O was to help the participants figure out how to capture the minimum necessary information to speed up their orienteering. Distinctive (but sometimes minimal) features around the control were in each window. Since the runners could not see the whited-out areas, pacing provided a big additional guide to judge the distance.

On Start-O, Geoffrey and Andrew raced around the course once more each, finishing the second time in 2:31 and 2:46 respectively. Time for the white course, guys! (by Vicki Woolworth)

On White, UC Student Mark Hopkins made a great run. He did the second run on yellow, coming in at 23:24. On Yellow, John Phillips edged Robert Olson by just 4 seconds.

On Window-O, we regarded both answers for the question at control #2 of window-O (the old bridge is upstream or downstream) as correct because the question was confusing for some people. The aim of all of the questions was to just give a proof that each runner had reached the correct control site, but not to challenge her/him with the question itself. Every answer made was reviewed in this context. In the short course, first place goes to Rick Fraga and Mack Cottitta. The long course was won by Steve Gregg followed by Dan Stoll-Hadayia and Syd Reader.

We greatly appreciate the following help at our meet. Many people willingly helped us out and the success of the meet owes a great deal to them and good publicity (REI, daily Cal, Website etc.). We are afraid to have forgotten some names.
