Presidio Results

August 2, 1998

by Vic Revenko, meet director

Under clear skies and a warm day, BAOC held its annual Presidio orienteering event. We attracted 215 people and 1 pet (at least one person took his dog with him). Of this total, 111 were non-members, 104 were members, and we signed up a dozen new members. Below are the complete results.

As a newly minted meet director, this event was a challenge but a lot of fun. What made it particularly so was the great support I got from the usual suspects. Evan Custer (Finishes); Ev & Jean Beuerman (Registration); Harold and Penny DeMoss (Control Pickup); Ian Tidswell (Course Design); Marsha Jacobs (Results); Aileen Abernathy, Cheryl Madson, and Mike Poulsen (Beginners Clinics); and Nancy Lindeman (Starts). What made it more impressive were the volunteers who came forward to help. Dan Stoll, David Meredith, Catherine Carr, Sharon Evans, Oleg and Galina Shaknovsky, Terry Gleason, Rosmary Johnson, Mike Fleishman, Steve Beuerman, Stephanie Chen, Cynthia Green, Rachel Care. Perhaps most thanks should go to Aileen Abernathy and Scott Aster, who helped coach me and vet the courses. In addition, Aileen and Mike Poulsen spent many hours before the event doing field-checking and updating the map in OCAD.

The mood of all participants was very upbeat. Even the Park officials at the visitor's center directed people to our event. This was a fun event for all, and everyone had a good time despite some technical problems with the courses. A few controls were miss marked, and the yellow course had some clue sheet errors. We gave credit for those problems when they were pointed out to us.

The White Course was challenging with perhaps more than desired advanced controls that allowed some route choices and decision-making. In spite of these challenges almost all starts finished. Carrie and Donna Gowan finished first, and many finished with generally good times. Catherine Carr, a new comer volunteered to help after her run. She, as well as some other new comers really got into the spirit of the event.

Pink attracted quite a few participants and most all finished the course. Steven Pulver led the honor roll with a time of about one hour.

Yellow was the most popular course. Gary Kraght led the way with a time just under 50 minutes. Will Allan was right behind him. One participant, Tim Bridge, brought his dog and had to carry him in spots. Orienteering has animal appeal. Almost all participants finished the course.

The intermediate Orange course attracted some veterans as well as new comers. Dennis Wildfogel led the Orange Course with a time of 67:33. There was a misclued control on Number 9, and we gave credit for this glitch when pointed out to us

Long Orange was scenic and long with a challenging control at Number 9 which was set next to some old bunkers that were not correctly mapped in spite of the corrections. Fortunately, most orienteers found the control and most finished the event. Tapio Karras finished the course at 68:58.

Congratulations to all. Thanks for making this a successful and fun event.
