To my pleasant surprise, and that of the many orienteers that came, Sunday, March 22, was a beautiful day. After predictions ranging from mostly cloudy to rain earlier in the week, we had a warm partly sunny day. The 180 or so people who showed up certainly enjoyed the day with many going out for a second course, or just lying around in the sun afterwards. Below are the complete results.
The morning's Start-O had almost 20 competitors ranging in age from 4 to 15. Jaakko Karras, age 9, won the course by finding all 10 controls correctly in less than 8 minutes. Michelle McMillan, 15, was right on 8 minutes for 2nd place, followed by Tina Leung, 14, in just over 9 minutes.
The White course was picked up in a stunningly fast 14 minutes by Ken & Jessica Douglas, but it was their second course of the day (having already _won_ Yellow). That put Cathy Humowiecki into 1st place at 27:07. Cathy remarked that she'd definitely want to try something harder next time, probably at Stanford. Carole, Holly, Jenny, and Laura of Girl Scout Troop 2880 picked up 2nd place in 28:15 followed closely by another pair of women, Gail and Sarah, in 28:40.
As mentioned above, the Yellow course was won by Ken & Jessica Douglas with the help of Audrey Warmuth in under 24 minutes. Did they even see the view (of San Francisco, Oakland & San Jose) from the top of the ridge? Several groups rounded out the top 4 with Dianne Brien & Dean Miller picking up 2nd, and R & W King picking up 3rd.
Orange was a surprisingly popular course, outstripping pre-event estimates at almost twice the number of competitors. Despite the choice of two longer, more challenging courses, the Score-O and Memory Score-O, most of the top orienteers in the club dropped down to Orange, including the man ranked #2 overall in the USA. The competition was so fierce that James Scarborough actually came in 2nd on the Orange course. One of the top young Swedish orienteers, Erik Ohlund, claimed first place in a commanding 17:31 on a reasonably hilly 3.1km course. Neeme Loorits also opted for the "sprint" course and finished in 3rd within 40 seconds of James. Top woman on the course was US Junior Team member Sarah Minarik, who finished in 32:43 despite a recent injury.
The Score-O was taken on by several competitors, including a few of the faster club members. Only five competitors picked up all the controls, Neal Barlow and Steve Gregg accomplishing the task in 47:45 and 50:29 for first and 2nd. First and 2nd place women Penny DeMoss and Angelica Riley came in next taking 3rd and 4th place overall, with Angelica edging out 5th place Bob Cooley by just 5 seconds.
The Memory Score-O competitors took on the same challenging course as the Score-O competitors, but without maps! Even though they could only look at a map while physically present at the start, or one of only two of the 27 controls, several competitors did nearly as well as the Score-O competitors who carried a map with them. Ian Tidswell, recently returning from Connecticut, picked up all 27 controls, but was just over 11 minutes late which dropped him back to 4th place with penalty points. Werner Haag managed to pick up 25 of the 27 controls, doing 10 or more at a time by memory, and still finished with several minutes to spare to pick up a very impressive 1st place. Brian Moore and Gavin Wyatt-Mair picked up 2nd and 3rd, with Brian edging out Gavin by 3 seconds.
Many thanks to all the people who made the event possible, a few of whom stepped out of the background to help out BAOC for the first time. Lans Taylor vetted the (mostly unstreamered) courses, yet came up with a valuable 3-page list of suggestions, and Neal Barlow vetted all the controls the morning of the event before most competitors had even arrived. Martin Weiss, Matthias Kohler and Cheryl Madson did the starts, and Charles Brenner, Andy & Mary Howland, Brian Moore and Angelica Riley did finishes and results. Josh and Debbie Friederichs did registration with help from Pat Roth, Werner Haag did beginners clinics, Manfred Kopisch did the Start-O, and probably several more who have escaped my typing fingers.
The most thanks of all go to my wife Angelica, not just because she helped out with finishes and results (and a bagel) on the day of the event, but for putting up with me over the many afternoons and evenings I spent mapping and drafting Coyote Hills.
