The rainy winter weather paused just in time for our March event at Calero, and approximately 200 orienteers emerged from their winter hibernation hungry for some conventional orienteering. Below are the complete results.
In previous years, the age of the Calero map has prevented using numerous areas and control sites; however, this year Bob Cooley transferred the old Calero map into OCAD, and then field-checked and corrected one of the more interesting north-facing slopes in the middle of the park. In addition, the OCAD version allowed those of us who were course-setting to edit the map near the controls. While we are far from having the whole Calero map corrected, it is clear from the parts that Bob has done that efforts on improving this map are well rewarded. If you are looking for a place to do some volunteer mapping, Calero would be a good choice; talk with Bob.
Jeff Lanam, in his first course-setting venture, set some very well-calibrated White, Yellow and Orange courses; they had very reasonable difficulty, yet each course had a few more challenging legs to increase the learning experience. Claire Livak won White with a time of 46:03 with John and Sue Rizzi, and Carl Reisinger very close behind. We almost ran out of maps for Yellow; I think newcomers were encouraged by Abby and George's clinics to try something more difficult. Pat and Matt Rabuzzi won Yellow with the time of 49:30. John Pagendarm won Orange in a close (2 second) finish with Ron MacCracken. (We had another close - one second - finish on Blue, between Brian Moore and Steve Gregg Perhaps we need 1/10 second clocks.)
While it's difficult to directly compare year-to-year results, all the advanced courses were running slightly faster this year, and the only explanation seems to be the new club uniforms. For example, comparing speeds (km/min), Robert Lewis improved 8% to win Brown with a time of 79:30, Aileen Abernathy advanced to Green and improved 38% with a time of 80:51, and Dennis Wildfogel, who couldn't run last year because he helped organize the event, improved an infinite amount to win Green with a time of 53:16. Let's hope that washing does not diminish the effects of these remarkable new uniforms.
Tapio designed very challenging Red and Blue courses that used some of the infrequently visited farther and higher reaches of the park. The courses included a very long route choice leg, and several shorter technical legs. Bob Cooley won Red at 100:56, and Erik Ohlund won Blue at 77:34. (Yes, that's really 10 min/km over 440 meters of climb.)
We would like to thank those who volunteered to help. Your help made the day of the event much easier and enjoyable for the organizers. I hope we haven't forgotten anybody: registration, Ev and Jean Beuerman, Esther Heller; clinics, George Minarik, Aileen Abernathy; finish, Mike Poulsen, Steve Jankowski, Bill Straka; results, Alan Glendinning, Robert Lewis; start-O, John Pagendarm, Ken, Claire & Lucia Livak; vetting, Derek MacLean; control Pick-Up, Harold & Penny Demoss, Steve Gregg, Ev and Jean Beuerman, Kelly Wells, and Thorsten Graeve.
