That nasty little kid known as El Nino took a break on the first day of March, which was much more lamblike that lionine. It was a lovely day: foggy and damp early, turning partly cloudy with even some sun later on. More than 100 cabin-fever sufferers came out to Goethe Park and had so much pent-up energy that 27 did more than one course. Below are the complete results.
The park is so small that there's only the room and challenge for white, yellow and orange. Controls can't be placed too far from trails, because there are so many. But the new map (revised a year ago) is a huge improvement.
The white course was won by Richard Zeunges and Barry Cole in a time of 15:16. Second were Art Livingston, Melidy and Jill Walker of Casa Robles High School ROTC in 17:08. Third were Marsha Hand and Sharon Kirkbride in 18:14.
Zipping around the yellow course in 27:20 were Larry and Nick Bergmooser. They were followed by Sarah Blanchette and Diana Gudeman at 29:30. Third were Anna Vanderveen, Jack Harrah and Rex the wonder dog.
Taking the orange course was Martin Bergstrand, a newcomer to the area from Sweden, in 32:27. Welcome to California, Martin! USOF President Gary Kraght was next at 41:50 and Bob Landry was third at 51:01.
I wish to thank my daughter, Carolyn Schmidt, who did registration and learned about orienteering for her fourth-graders, who asked the next day, "Did you get lost?" Also, Ron Gross, who did starts and finishes and Rich Petersen, who not only did starts and finishes, but picked up the yellow and orange controls. Also, Rachel Freund, who picked up the white controls, and Brian Peterson, who stepped in to help with starts.
