The weather was kind enough to let up for the day and provide relatively dry orienteering conditions. Bruce Wolfe proved the best match for the other "orienteering" conditions on the advanced courses. For many competitors, the slow per kilometer times were a result of the poor map as much as the steep slopes. Bruce's 15:33 per kilometer was actually much faster than his 20+ the first time in this terrain, indicating the "long" course should have been longer. This fact caused an unusual number of second courses by advanced runners. There was adequate challenge on the Yellow, a little more technical than usual and on the Orange which featured some very steep terrain followed by relatively subtle contours on top.

Keep in mind, however, that for the advanced courses the results are not suitable for valid a comparison of orienteering skills. As with most events, elements of terrain, mapping, course- setting, familiarity or organization, did not meet standards for fair competition. In this case, I consider the terrain marginal but probably acceptable if accurately mapped. Because of the poor map, luck played a disproportionate role in the order of finish and spread in times. Ask Tom or Wyatt. Additionally, the courses did not follow color coding specifications and there were several non-standard instructions which were not equally followed. Not every event, of course, has the resources required for a "B" or Badge event. In short, this event was good for fun and training but not serious competition or rankings. What did make this meet atypical was the combination and severity of the conditions and, maybe most of all, the fact that they were made clear in the announcement and here in the results. Just a couple of things we can do more of to recognize the different purposes and potential of each event.

Special thanks to
