Huddart Park Blue Rerun Results

January 28th, 1995

A personal account & some results from Wyatt Riley...

Besides being a good training experience, this mass start Blue was a lot of fun for me, especially the frenzied sprint of screaming wild animals (yes, we homo sapiens) going to the first control. Being close to Lans for much of the way, it was amazing to see how incredibly fast he can sprint down really steep slopes! (You've really got to see it to believe it!) The race between the two of us kept switching back and forth, with me gaining slightly on the uphills and a little due to the extra familiarity with the terrain (due to course setting...), and Lans tearing up any lead I could muster whenever I made a slight error, or the slope got steeper than 30 degrees downhill! Going into the last control we were within sight... Lans having almost completely made up first a 2 minute deficit, then another 1 minute deficit going from 13-14. (But of course I'd planned the evil uphill finish leg to give myself that last little advantage I needed...)

(I wonder what Lans has in store for me at Calero.... ;-)

(BTW, my 2:16 finish "sprint" was eclipsed by Neal Barlow's 1:46 flight up 40 meters and across 350 meters from 14 to the finish! (Just about 5 min/km through some bushes up an 11% grade!))

I was quite surprised at the magnitude of improvements that people had between the first and second time out on the course...

People who showed up both days who I heard times of included:
                 Original Time Re-run Time Improvement
Lans Taylor ~72 mins ~61 mins ~11 minutes
Tom Strat ~112 mins ~72 mins ~40 minutes!
Neal Barlow ~98 mins ~76 mins ~22 minutes
Tapio Karras ~154 mins ~84 mins ~70 minutes!

Mikell Platt ~67 mins (first time out was the "re-run")
It is really surprising to see how much faster it is _possible_ for you to cover the same course once you know where it is. Most people, as expected had far fewer "errors" the second time around, but almost everyone improved significantly beyond what their "errors" were, which means something besides "errors" was slowing them down the first time... It's seems that merely the act of navigating can take several minutes on a course, even for Blue level runners.

Lans actually did an excellent job accounting for most of the improvement in speed, especially since (I think) he forgot to take into account the 2 minutes of map copy the first time around.
