Cozy Bayfront Park offered August's best orienteering opportunity west of the Continental Divide, and about 180 people came out to enjoy the perfect weather (overcast early, relatively cool all day) and fast running conditions.

Event AnnouncementOn White, Karla Smith and her daughters Jenna and Rachel ran to victory, and then turned in a very good time on Yellow as a second course. In second place was the team of Maya and Bo Curry. They then ran Yellow individually, and turned in the two fastest times on that course for the day. Junior Garrett Pitsenbarger was the winner on Yellow, with the narrowest margin of the day, 20 seconds ahead of Jeff and James Tait. Andrea Shepherd was the first woman finisher on Yellow.
The third course offered was Trail-less O', with the option to extend to Trail-less+ (two loops) or Trail-less+2 (three loops). As its name implies, the map for the first loop showed none of the park's roads or trails, fences, or other person-made objects. This has been the standard for "advanced" courses at Bayfront. As an added challenge, the second loop map omitted not only the trails, but also the contour lines, requiring competitors to navigate primarily by rock and vegetation features. The third loop used a complete map, and was in fact identical to the Yellow course, except for the location of the start triangle. The ideal running conditions encouraged over half of the Trail-less entrants to complete the full 7.6 km Trail-less+2.
Misha Bilenko led the small group that ran the single loop. Brad Wetmore easily won the Trail-less+ version, turning in the fourth fastest times of the day on both loops. Lauren Wolfe in second was top female and top junior, in her last Bay Area event before heading east for college. On Trail-less+2, all I can say is that only the jackrabbits were moving faster than Bruce Wolfe! About a minute behind Bruce was Mark Elgood, veteran of British and East Coast orienteering in his first appearance as a BAOC member. We look forward to seeing Mark and his family often. Yelena Krasnov was the first female finisher on Trail-less+2.
A truly amazing amount of volunteer effort went into making this event successful. I want to thank Audrie Faist for arranging the permit; Steve Haas for vetting the courses; Bob Cooley for printing the maps; Jean and Ev Beuerman for handling registration; the ace parking patrol of Peter Graube, Chris and Sarah Cobey, and Matthias Kohler; Brad Wetmore and Jeff Lanam for beginners clinics; the start crew of Susan Chang, Russell Greene, Brad Johanson, and Todd Neller (Todd gets the day's good sport award - he is Brad J's friend visiting from out of town!); Mike Fleishman, Esther Heller, Sandra Skinner, Chuck Spalding, Alan Houser, and Cathy Bolger on finishes and results; Meg Gerstner and Alan Glendinning, who kept the map exchange humming all day and then picked up controls; John Pagendarm, who also did control pick-up; and again to Brad W, Peter, Chuck and Esther, who all helped with set- up or take-down. The final thank-you is for Linda Lacoste, head ranger at Bayfront, for her invaluable support and assistance.
