Observations by Steve Beuerman - 2/1/04
Some interesting observations. Of the 17 entrants that found 28 or more controls, there were 13 different pairs of controls skipped. The most popular skip (3 entrants) was 18,19. Two entrants skipped 25,27 and two skipped 19,22.
Thanks for running!

It rained the day before and the two days afterwards, but the day of the Emerald Hills event, Saturday, January 31 was a sunny winter day. Over 130 people came out to enjoy the day. Only 6 of the advanced controls were at nearby Edgewood County Park; the rest were on the streets of Redwood City and Woodside.
Again this year, course setter, Steve Beuerman designed interesting courses using the Western Massachusetts Rules instead of a Score-O for the advanced courses. The participants could find any 7, 14, 21, or 28 or the 30 advanced controls and come back in without having to worry about being overtime and losing points. The beginner's course and the 14 and 28 point courses were the most popular this year.
Not one of the other 17 individuals or groups on the 28 control course picked the same 2 controls to skip that the winner, Syd Reader picked. In fact, no one else picked the same two controls to skip as Steve Gregg, Steve Hass and Stephen Price the 2nd, 3rd and 4th place participants on the 28 control course.
On the 21 control course, the first 3 finishers, Doug Bass, Chuck Spalding and William Strauss all picked the same 9 controls to skip for their course.
Ruth Cunningham was the winner on the beginner's course. We had individuals, groups including scouts, and families, 2 with kids in strollers, finishing the beginner's course.
