China Camp The China Camp Club Championships went very smoothly. First, the weather was perfect. The
footing was excellent. The rangers
were happy. Second,
Evan managed the Course Setting, e punch, and many other troublesome
details that presented themselves. He also guided Rob Clima and Laura
McKeegan in their white and yellow course setting. Rob and Laura worked
long and hard before and during the meet doing many, many tasks. All these
efforts were well received and admired. Third, we had plenty of volunteer help
which makes light work for all. Some folks
were sent away without enough to suit them.
Penny and Harold did major tent duty and then did major control pick up duty.
Bob Cooley made his frequent and extensive remapping, vetting, and printing contribution.
We missed him and Patty at the meet.
Tom and Sandy Guldman did white and yellow starts almost all day.
Judy Koehler and Brad Wetmore did the beginnner's clinics.
James Wilson and Vivian Lee managed registration. The
rest of these names did several jobs a piece, many of which came up unexpectedly
during the meet.

see what a long list this is and they all smiled. They
made being meet director easy. It was wonderful. Anyone
who helped but is missing from this list also deserves thanks. - Joan At China Camp, there are a large
number of nests on the ground made of sticks, usually near the base of a tree.
Here's a picture of one.
These nests or lodges are made by the Dusky footed wood rat, or Neotoma fuscipes,
also called a pack rat. They can be up to 2 meters wide and 2 meters tall.
It seems like something that big deserves to be mapped. ;-) I don't know
how long a lodge lasts, however, and then one would have the problem of what size
one would have to be to be mapped. Both Bob and I think that there are a lot more
lodges in the park now than there were several years ago. I wonder if there
is any relationship to the increase in the wood rat population and the sudden
oak death syndrome. The dusky footed wood rat is a nocturnal animal,
and is around 40 cm long, half of which is the tail. It is only found along
the Pacific Coast from Washington to California, and they prefer oak forests.
Their main predators are owls, coyotes, skunks. They can harbor the organism
for Lyme disease. -
Evan As a former docent
at Big Basin, I can verify: dusky-footed wood rats (aka 'pack rats') make big
nests. And they can be thousands of years old - no kiddin'! I don't have my docent
manual handy (probably pitched it when I moved north) so can't give you the exact
quote. Doubt if any in China Camp qualify, but there you have it. - Abby Indeed, packrat middens ("nests") are a valuable paleoecological tool. By examining the fossil animal bits, wood, bark, leaves, seeds, and pollen (my favorite) found inside the preserved nests one can build a picture of the past ecology of the area. The neat thing about packrats is that they don't go very far from their nest. If you've got a midden in a cave you can be pretty sure that that's where the packrat lived 2000 or 10000 years ago. And the best part - the preservation of these middens is made possible by the existence of crystallized urine. Anyhoo, I'll leave this to someone else to find a way to bring this back to orienteering. ;-) - Cristina If you
