BIG BASIN Back to Results Oct. 5, 2003 by Trevor Pering, meet director The Big Basin event on October 5th was a big success, due to the high attendance and wonderful weather. Attendance was good for Big Basin: about 150 entries across all 7 courses (with the actual number of participants higher due to groups). The weather was perfect -- without oppressive heat and no rain! There were many groups of adventure racers and white/yellow families, obviously encouraged to attend due to recent publicity activities (Thanks Nancy!). Like usual at Big Basin, the courses were long and hard. The fastest time on any advanced course was still over an hour -- Blue and Green were particularly tough, with nobody coming in under two hours. Unfortunately, some of the controls on the advanced courses needed to be removed due to unforeseen course setting difficulties. On the day of the event, the ranger approached us and said she'd gotten a call from the folks in charge of the water treatment at Big Basin, because they'd seen runners on the road near their water tower and treatment plant. The water treatment folks (who aren't directly associated with the park rangers) are sensitive to anyone even knowing that their facilities exist, and the ranger wanted to keep them happy, so she asked us if we could do something about the runners on the road. Unfortunately, the road was a very popular route to and from one of the controls on the advanced course, impacting the brown, green, red, and blue courses which all had one or more controls in the woods west of the plant. Van went out to the control near the road (206) to try to re-direct people to use the woods instead of the road when leaving the control, but found them coming from both directions, so he had to abort that plan and go to the control immediately before all these controls (203) and cut off that part of the course (204, 205, and 206) from any further runners. Brown and Green runners had to skip one control (203), Red and Blue runners had to skip three controls (204, 205, and 206). The fact he had to re-direct some runners and change the course for others makes the results unfair and unusable for club ranking points, unfortunately, and Van apologizes for any inconvenience anyone suffered. That section of the map has been marked as out-of-bounds so that we don't try to use that section again in future events at Big Basin. Thanks to the host of volunteers who helped put on the event: John Pagendarm, Larry Pagendarm, Van Boughner, Robert Lewis, Jeff Lanam, Nancy Lindeman, Nick Corsano, Doug Stein, Syd Reader, Tapio Karras, Gaelna Shakhnovsky, Eve & Jean Bauerman, Stephanie MacLean, Dan Greene, Thiago Ghilardi, Kelly Wells, and Peter Graube.
