BAYFRONT PARK Back to Results July 20, 2003 by Steve Haas, meet director About 120 people came out to enjoy a low-key day of orienteering in one of our smaller but very easy-to-get-to parks. Right next to the Bay, the park has great views but very little shade. The lack of shade combined with a hot day caused a number of people who might have gone longer stopped after 1 or 2 loops of the 1, 2, 3-loop trail-less course because of the heat. This meet featured a first-time course-setter (Jim Waite) and first-time meet director (me). Thanks to lots of pre-meet advice and hands-on assistance during the event from several veterans – Chuck Spalding, Dennis Wildfogel, and Bob Cooley – and some last-second volunteering when we didn’t have quite enough workers, things went pretty smoothly. Jim Waite, with lots of help from Johan Gorby, set white, yellow, and trail-less courses. Trail-less runners were allowed to choose among 1, 2, and 3 loops around the park, with a new map and new punch card for each loop. The trail-less maps left off the multiplicity of trails that criss-cross the park, making the navigation more challenging, and the 3-loop format made it possible to set a course that took an hour for the fastest finishers even in a park this small. Multiple loops also made running the meet more challenging: (1) the multiple exchange and finish points required more volunteer helpers; (2) until we realized what was going on and adjusted for it, we couldn’t tell who had stopped at the end of 1 or 2 loops, and who had taken off on additional loops; and (3) lots of extra pieces of paper to sort out and check afterwards to figure out times and make sure that everyone had visited all the controls correctly. On the White course, Grant, Ian, and Harrison Oglesby finished first with a time of 25:27, about 5 minutes ahead of the second-place team of Alvin Kernan and Alex Long. On Yellow, Doug Felt took first in 34:30, 3 minutes ahead of Eric and Courtland Prestemon. With Yellow as his second course, Jim Morris ran just over 34 minutes on Yellow. For the trail-less courses, Jeff and James Tait led the pack for the one loop runners in 32:55. Dennis Wildfogel finished first among those who chose to run two loops, with a time of 43:49. For the longest run of the day, the three loop trail-less, Matthias Kohler edged out Thorsten Graeve, 57:30 to 58:04, with Dan Greene five minutes further back. Matthias ran the first loop 34 seconds faster than Thorsten, and then finished with the same 34 second margin. Volunteers are clearly the key to making this meet - and BAOC - successful. I don’t know whether I should be more thankful to the people who agreed ahead of time to help, keeping me from panicking, or to those who realized that I hadn’t lined up enough people in the 12:30-2:00 period and helped out on the spur of the moment. A big thanks to both! Throughout the meet, following Chuck’s advice, I noted on a piece of paper on a clipboard the names of all the people who were helping in various capacities. Unfortunately, now that I’m finally getting around to doing this write-up, I have no idea what happened to that piece of paper with the names. If I forget anyone, I apologize.
Coursesetting: Jim Waite, with lots of assistance from Johan Gorby Below are the results.
