It was a relief to see cloudy skies early Sunday after several days of record breaking heat, though for most of the day we enjoyed pleasant temperatures and sunshine. A little over 100 orienteers showed up, only about half of them club members. It was great to see so many families coming out to try orienteering , some pushing strollers, others led by their kids. Unfortunately we did not recruit many newcomers from our park neighbors, the East Bay chapter of Life's Finest, a car club. They did, however, provide music for us free of charge, enhancing the urban park experience. In return, we moved our finish slightly from the mapped position, which I hope did not confuse or frustrate too many participants. I also hope the parking situation was not too challenging.

On the White Course, the father-daughter duo of Bill and Sonja Wright took first place in a blazing 36:19, followed not far behind by the Saputra family. In third was Mindy Johnson and Colin Wright. Could it have helped that both Sonja and Colin Wright did Start-O for their warm-up? A group of experienced Boy Scouts dominated the yellow course, with father and son James and Jeff Tait taking first and second, followed by the team of Jeff Hamilton and Tim Switick.

The score-O was a race to see who could find them all the fastest, with Syd Reader taking them all in 46:10, followed by Doug Stein in 48:07. The leading woman of the day was Vivian Lee, almost five minutes ahead of Penny DeMoss. Most finished within the 90 minute time limit, with only one group deciding to find them all despite the penalty. Next time more controls!

I truly appreciate the folks who volunteered, this would have been completely impossible without all the help before, during and after the meet.
