On May 9, 243 people experienced Indian Valley at its finest, a beautiful spring day at the height of wildflower season. Among the participants were a busload of South Bay girl scouts on a "mystery" expedition. Indian Valley also inaugurated BAOC's 2003 Adventure Racer series with a clinic and a course tailored for adventure racers. About 15 adventure racers were attracted to our event, not a bad beginning!
After preliminary courses had been designed and vetted, we were restricted by park rangers from using a substantial portion of Indian Valley Open Space. All courses had to be quickly redesigned and vetted. Course setters Bill Papendick, Rob Clima and Laura McKeegan performed heroics to get the new courses ready. Although in the end one control was somewhat misplaced too low in a reentrant, most participants were not aware of anything other than BAOC's long tradition of outstanding courses.
The White course was won by the team of Paul Malokas and Charles Thiede running under 10 minutes/kilometer, an excellent pace for first-timers. David Cook was a close second. Another team of Mark Stevens and Robert Rye blasted through the Yellow course, again in under 10 minutes/kilometer. All of these people went on to try Orange as a second course. The Orange course was easily won by Dan Holman in 52 minutes. There was no competition on the Adventure Racers course as Rod Jaehn, an experienced orienteer, outfoxed an assortment of adventure racers.
The Short Brown field was led by Penny DeMoss, Joe Scarborough was tops in the regular Brown, Hannu Haarma had his usual superb run on Green, and the Red/Blue course was bested by Vladimir Gusiatnikov in tight competition with Syd Reader. Among the women of note (besides Penny with her win on Short Brown) was Patty Clemo, who has recently been running well on Brown. Congratulations to everyone who competed!
I am always grateful to the many BAOC volunteers that make our events seem "organized" and "professional", and fun of course. The event at Indian Valley was more challenging than some, with last minute course changes to support. Besides our indomitable course setters of Bill, Rob and Laura, a special thanks goes to Bob Cooley, who was printing maps until the morning of the event. The Indian Valley Volunteer Honor Roll includes: Permits - Rosemary Johnson, Tent Setup - Harold & Penny DeMoss, Starts - Joan Roos, Neil Peterson, Sandy & Tom Guldman, Finish - Leslie Minarik, Bill Straka, Registration - Ev & Jean Beuerman, George & Pat Aster, Esther Heller, Clinics - Scott Aster, Stew Hintz, Ian Tidswell, Greeter - Judy Koehler, E-punch - Evan Custer, Jeff Lanam, Trinka Gillis, Bjorn Widerstrom, Bill Straka, Control Pickup - Steve Gregg, Wes Erck, Mark Blair, Gavin Wyatt-Mair, Bill Papendick. Thank you all.
Below are the results. Also be sure to check out the e-punch splits for the advanced courses.
