When forecasts early in the week predicted rain, Werner Haag prayed to the Sons of Odin for dry weather. Due to his prayers or not, the rains held back just long enough for us to hang controls and conduct the meet.
The sunshine brought out 282 participants for the standard 7 courses, plus several more for Start-O and Radio-O. With e-punch registrants topping 100, Robert Lewis said we may have set a record for a non-A meet. We hosted 3 or 4 scout groups, including a group of about 40 from Palo Alto that camped in the park Saturday night.
Werner designed Start-O and the advanced courses, Brad Wetmore designed White and Yellow, and the two collaborated on Orange. We had three different starts: White/Yellow near registration, Orange/Green/Brown in the northwest part of the map (which had not been used for a meet in 12 years), and Red/Blue in the northeast. Folks enjoyed visiting the outer reaches of the map. The whole park boasted a spendid display of wildflowers, especially California poppies. One club veteran was so focused on the flowers that he ran right past one of his controls and had to backtrack.
As for results, junior Jukka Karras came in first on White, beating first-timers Courtland Prestemon and his dad Eric by 32 seconds. David Miles was first on Yellow.
Matt Holman won on Orange by a whopping 37 minutes. Newcomer William Strauss did quite well, leading the pack until the 7th control where he made a parallel reentrant error. He still finished a respectable 4th. Top female finisher was Cheryl Madson in 7th place. This course was a bit too difficult technically, evidenced by lots of DNFs and a winning time of over an hour. At least one first-time Orange team quit partly due to the poison oak, which was heavier than average for our events.
Penny DeMoss cleaned up on Brown. She usually runs a longer course, but wanted to return in time to try Bob Cooley's Radio-O, where she performed well also. Second on Brown, 25 minutes behind Penny, was Patty Clemo. To keep the course short Werner omitted a GO control, having Brown finish from a completely different direction than the other courses. None of the 32 entries seemed to have a problem, thanks partly to the setup crew's expert finish chute design.
Steve Gregg finished first on Green, and Yelena Krasnov, placing fourth, was top female on Green. On Red, Matthias Kohler beat out Tapio Karras by a mere 2 seconds, and the lead changed hands 7 times among 4 runners on the 10-control course. Vivian Lee, the only woman to attempt Red, finished 11th. Vadimas Masalkovas came in first on Blue, with Brian Moore of RMOC finishing second, 13 minutes behind Vadim.
Self-start and carpooling for Red/Blue worked well. The only hitch was that many stubs never made it back to the e-punch station. With careful planning this can be corrected next time.
Sharon Evans took excellent command of the experimental carpool/transit award program, granting Scarborough Orienteering coupons to 31 orienteers who reported arriving in a full vehicle or a vehicle with 3 or more adults. Only one orienteer, Matt Strother, reported taking public transit to the meet, starting in Berkeley and taking BART and two busses before hitchhiking up Mt. Hamilton Rd.
At course closing time of 2:30--a half hour later than usual--several individuals and teams had not yet returned from intermediate and advanced courses. Two or three were still out at 3:30 and small-scale search efforts were initiated by the club. Searchers carried the club's radios; this lessened anxiety about compounding the problem. Everyone returned or was found by 4:00.
Most of the latecomers--including two teams on Blue--felt they couldn't help being late. They didn't know they should constantly monitor their progress, bailing out to a trail or road when tardiness becomes inevitable.
Brad and I were novices at BAOC event production, and Werner had never set using e-punch before, so we relied on plenty of guidance from club veterans. Marsha Jacobs mentored both Brad and me. Others providing significant hand-holding include Abby Wolfe, Evan Custer, Robert Lewis, and Bob Cooley. Finally, the club's published guides on event production was of invaluable assistance.
Thanks to Vladimir Gusiatnikov for armchair vetting, to Syd Reader & Doug Masiel for field vetting, to Jimmy Chung for setting out water, and to Emily Farrah for results tabulation.
Many thanks, too, to our day-of-event helpers, many of whom had never
volunteered at a meet before:
