A beautiful spring day brought more than spring flowers to Annadel, on March 30 it brought 413 orienteers to brave the technical demands of the park. Most people were first-timers or recreational orienteers, as we had almost 300 people on the White and Yellow courses. Registration, clinics, starts and finish were all hectic at times. But thanks to the many volunteers who pitched in, the meet organization bended but did not break, and at the end there were 0 misplaced controls, 0 lost orienteers, and 413 happy ones.
The White course was won by a family of five, the LaForces. This is unusual, as individuals or groups of two usually have an advantage. Greg Hicks and Matide Rodriquez were close behind. Tops on the Yellow course was the team of Marty Lautze and David McFadden. Marty also helped manage the White-Yellow-Orange start, so perhaps he psyched out his competition on the starting line! The Orange course best were Nick and Ken Perry, followed closely by veteran Orange runner Marie-Josee Parayre.
Of the advanced courses, Brown was far and away the most popular, but also the most troublesome. Vicki Lee won in a slow time of about 20 minutes per kilometer, with most of her competition making large mistakes on the technical terrain. Former world elite Hannu Haarma put the hammer down on Green, and Tapio Karras had an excellent day on Red. Top finishers on the Blue course were Juha Heinonen and Sergey Grushin. Best women finishers (besides Vicki) were Dayle Lavine on Green, Vivian Lee on Red, and Penny DeMoss on Blue.
