Sunny weather and 75F temperatures in early March! So this is why we live in the Bay Area!
At this year's event the advanced courses followed a short course format, where the courses were approximately half of the usual length but with the same number of controls. This takes the emphasis away from route choice and endurance, and towards fast, efficient control location and the ability to maintain higher speeds for shorter timeframes. It seemed that everyone enjoyed for courses, with many running two different courses to get in a full workout. That combined with the approximately 175 participants made for a busy time for the volunteers, who nevertheless did a great job!
The white and yellow (beginner) courses designed by first-time course-setter Adrian Martin were standard length, but the open terrain made for some fast times. Louis Poitras was fastest on white (31min), with a 3 minute lead over the next group. The results were tighter on Yellow, where Mike Locke and Jonathon Kiyoi beat out Bob Strauss by only 47 seconds.
For the intermediate (orange) course (designed by Rex Winterbottom, another relative newcomer to course design), Victoria Lee took at little time away from redesigning the BAOC website to win in convincing style. For the advanced courses, the short format resulted in very close times - with first and second places separated by less than 2 minutes (much less for several courses). Winners (on their first course) were Gary Kraght (Brown), Hannu Haarma (Green), Tapio Karras (Red), and Vladimir Gusiatnikov (Blue).
Comparison with the Point Pinole sprint event from two weeks before is interesting. At Pinole Syd Reader beat out Vlad by 1:25. At Shell Ridge Vlad held on by just 23 seconds. Vlad's endurance training for Rogaine (24 hour) events doesn't seem to have done him any harm in the speed department!
As always, the event was made possible and successful by the many volunteers. Rex Winterbottom and Adrian Martin both did wonderful jobs setting the advanced and beginner courses, respectively. Other significant support came from Ev and Jean Beuerman, Steve Gregg, Evan Custer, Harold and Penny DeMoss, George Minarik, Jeff Lanam, Vivian Lee, Vicki Lee, James Wilson, Joan Roos, and Dayle and Rick Lavine.
