The Bay Area's first O' meet since before the summer solstice attracted a solid turnout of 185 orienteers to Bayfront Park. Bayfront's cozy confines make it ideal for beginners, but it proved again that its low-key topographic details can offer a good challenge to the fleet of foot and the keen of eye.
A highlight of the day was the BAOC's only scheduled Trail Orienteering event of the year. Trail-O' is a fairly new version of the sport, designed to provide people with limited mobility - whether from disability, injury or age - the chance to compete on equal terms with those who are more able-bodied. Success relies on map-reading ability and powers of observation, not speed and stamina. We had two courses, beginner and intermediate. Club veteran Dox Doxiadis won an uncontested victory with a perfect score on the former. Steve Beuerman won the Keen of Eye award by identifying 10 of 11 controls correctly on the intermediate course. One of the features of this course was a timed control, where a monitor recorded the length of time it took the competitor to make a decision once at the viewing station. The time serves as a tie-breaker. Steve didn't need it, but his 12 seconds was half the time of anyone else who identified it correctly. Larry Pagendarm and Gary Kraght each got 9 controls right.
On White, five teams finished under a half hour, all within a two-minute range. Mimi Hui and Jose Machuca finished first. Second place went to the team of Sally Andrews and two 11-year olds, Christian Opperman and Thomas Tarleton. Honors for the top all-junior team went to three other 11-year olds, Benjamin Struve, Nolan Kent and Michael Sakoi. On Yellow, the most popular course, the group of Sam Huber, Jeff and Robyn Wefel was first, with Chris Buchner second, and Frank Markowitz third. They were followed by Vasya Volkov, the top junior finisher.
The final two courses were a short and long "Trail-less O'", standard courses but run using maps that omitted all roads, trails, fences and other person-made objects. On the short course, Gary Kraght took first, with George Minarik second. In a family triumph, Louise Madrid was the first female, and daughter Rachel Care the top junior. In the long course, Doug Stein retained his Bayfront Fleet of Foot crown with a five-minute victory over Dan Greene. Yelena Krasnov was the first female and David Falck the top junior.
I have many people to thank for the smooth running of this meet. First on the list is Alan Glendinning, who reviewed the courses and logistics, hung controls, set up start and finishes, ran the White/Yellow/Trail-less finish, and picked up controls. Others to whom I extend my gratitude include Senior Girl Scout Megan Madsen (publicity for Trail O, timed control monitor), Meg Gerstner (site setup, starts, control pickup), Ev & Jean Beuerman (registration), Chuck Spalding (setup, starts, results), Steve Haas (setup, control pickup), Marsha Jacobs and Scott Aster (beginners' clinics), Ben Wahlstrand (starts), Gary Kraght and Steve Beuerman (Trail O finish), Dan Greene, Shirley Parlan and Larry Pagendarm (control pickup), Bob Cooley (map printing), and especially my wife Esther Heller, who was indispensable in all event preparations, and staffed the Trail O finish most of the day.
