We had a great turnout for the National Orienteering Day event in Oakland - over 200 participants, with 75% of them novices. From the beautiful weather, interesting courses, and comments, perhaps we will see a few of them back out again soon!
The WHITE course, featuring fairly straightforward navigation, was the most popular course. The course was longer than usual, but there were no complaints. Pat McLaughlin tore around the course in 20 minutes - excellent job! Most others took longer to savor the course.
The YELLOW course, with slightly more challenging navigation and a bit more climb, was my personal favorite. It featured great views across the Bay to San Francisco and the Golden Gate and toured most of the monuments in the park. Pat was also fastest on this course, but no one took longer than 1-1/2 hours for this or the white course.
The ORANGE course was longer, steeper, and more challenging. It visited the upper part of the park with the open redwood forests. Wyatt Riley spent the least time enjoying this course - less than 35 minutes.
Lost and found: 1 compass. Let me know if it is yours (describe it), otherwise it joins the BAOC equipment pool.
The event would not have been nearly so successful without the help of the many enthusiastic volunteers. In particular let me thank Joe Scarborough (maps), Steve Gregg (vetting, hanging controls), Harold & Penny DeMoss (starts, finish, pickup), Gavin Wyatt-Mair (starts), Judy Koehler (clinic), Gary Kraght (clinic), Nancy Lindeman (publicity), Vivian Lee (registration), Cheryl Madson (registration, finish), Rex Winterbottom (results), Mark Blair (equipment, results). Last, but not least, I would like to thank the NOD sponsors, Maptec and Brunton, for their support and donation of prizes.
Here's the results for the JMP event on May 4. I hope to send it to all the folks who included their email address on the entry form sometime over the weekend.
