Although the previous day's rain threatened to stay around, it left before all but the earliest starters. As a result, we got a big rush toward the end of the day, ending up with more than 170 competitors. Below are the complete results.
Martin Farenfield ran away with the Blue lead, while Slava Akinin, newly arrived at Stanford, edged Syd Reader for second. Doug Stein won Red, 2:06 ahead of Mattias Kohler, who was only two seconds ahead of SDO's Annabel Fernandez. Francois Leonard finished Green well ahead of his competition, though Chuck and Evan gave good showings. Penny DeMoss doesn't usually run Brown, but she was in a hurry to leave, so she blazed through it. George Minarik and Toby Ferguson were second and third. Marie-Josee Parayre was first on Orange, with Tom Thomas and Jack Bowers following. Steve Sutton beat Gary Kraght and Malcolm Wyatt-Mair on the Yellow course. The team of Nick Biss and Tim Kelm took White, ahead of Chelsea Waite.
Particular thanks to those who stayed at their posts to get the latecomers registered and started. Vladimir Gusiatnikov updated the map, designed the courses and hung all the controls in Saturday's rain. Debbie Wojtowicz, my assistant meet director, arrived early with Kevin Schoenfeld. Together, they set up the finish and helped wherever needed. Peter Graube also arrived early (always appreciated!), pitched the E-punch tent, helped Vlad set up the start, and took the first start shift with Michael Fleishman. Meg Gerstner and Alan Glendenning succeeded them at the start. Kevin, Doug Masiel, and Syd Reader handled the finish. Abby Wolfe and Dan Greene gave beginners' clinics to many newcomers. Registration doesn't begin to cover all that Ev and Jean Beuerman undertook. The E-punch station was manned by Robert Lewis and Evan Custer, while Debra LaVergne handled White and Yellow results. Alan LaVergne picked up the start. Controls were picked up by Dean French, John Pagendarm, Mark Blair, and Mattias Kohler, with Chuck Spaulding and Bill Straka returning later in the week to get the remote controls that no one had the energy for on Sunday. I tried to get the name of everyone who helped, but I know I missed a few. Thanks to everyone.
I should also acknowledge the help of the Santa Clara County Park rangers, who are always helpful and encouraging.
