by Sharon Evans, meet director

Once again, the weather held in our favor for the first meet of the year! We had 19 entries on White, and 41 on the Score-O, with over 100 participants in all. A lot of people went in groups, which made for a very festive event. Many people decided to ignore the time limit on the Score-O, and just have a nice long hike, run, or stroll (or all 3). Below are the complete results.

Part of the good turnout was attributable to course-setter Wyatt Riley, who put the ever-aging black-and-white map onto OCAD, and then added Edgewood Park! Though still a bit rough in parts, everyone appreciated the much improved map!

Course Setter's Commentary

On the (extendable) Score-O, there was a sufficient spread of controls so that even the fastest orienteers could not gather all of them. In fact, the two competitors that picked up the most controls went over their time limit, and the overtime penalty knocked them both out of the top positions.

Winner Steve Gregg, well-known for his speed and good eye for the clock, picked up 23 controls, including all 3 of the 10-minute time extension controls, and finished a few minutes under his (extended) 90-minute time limit. His loop took him down through the streets of Emerald Hills, then looping through the trails of Edgewood park, looping around along Canada Road (near I-280), and finally coming back up over the hill to get back to the school.

With just a handful of Stanford and Emerald Hills orienteering events to his name (with middle-of-the-pack results), who would have expected Steve Haas to take 2nd place!? Steve H. had a very similar strategy to Steve Gregg, actually picking up one more control, but coming in slightly overtime. (I wonder, is this the same Steve Haas who holds Occidental College records in the 100, 200, and 800 meters?)

Syd Reader picked up all but one of the controls, but with no watch to warn him of how far overtime he was going, and a mild injury to slow him down, he ended up losing 28 of his 31 points for going overtime. (But he guessed at one, so, based on the way we scored, it looks like he visited 32.) Angelica Riley picked up an impressive 20 controls (top female control total), but also missed her time limit by a wide margin. Rumor has it that her husband (the course setter) didn't explain the _extendable_ Score-O rules very well....

Thanks for the Help!

This meet would not have been so successful without the valuable support of the following folks:

SCORE-O

The way we scored it: We gave credit (one point) for each control visited.
One point was deducted for a wrong answer. One wrong answer was forgiven.
Therefore, if you got 1 wrong answer, 0 points were deducted. If you got
2 wrong answers, 1 point was deducted, and so on.

Wrong answers: we were very flexible with the answers. We accepted several
write-ins. #101 was totally our fault (it was changed after the vetters had
vetted), and we apologize to the people who were the "beta testers" (first
ones who hit it and discovered the flaw).

The numbers following the person(s) name(s) are listed in the following order:
Column I: Number of controls visited
   Column II: Overtime Penalty
Column III: Number of Wrong Answers (not including the forgiven one)
Column IV: Net Overall Score (the winner determinant - i.e., the most important column)
   Column V: Actual Time -- Score-O time limit achieved (60, 70, 80, or 90 minutes)
