Wilder Ranch - Golden Goat

Santa Cruz
July 29, 2001

by Van Boughner, course setter

About 70 people came out to experience this year's Golden Goat and Golden Kid. Wilder Ranch State Park is well suited for such an event because of the relatively open terrain and the shape of the park lends itself to the creation of a big looping course. This year there were two loops: a long loop (10.2 km, 350 m climb) up to the top region of the park and back, and a shorter loop (3k m, 50 m climb) that stayed down low, along the cliffs above the beaches, in the newly mapped section of the map. The second loop featured a couple of controls on the beaches themselves, including one right in front of the fern grotto, which features ferns growing out of the roof of the cave entrance.

If you completed the first loop you completed the "Golden Kid"; if you completed both loops you completed the "Golden Goat." Below are the complete results. Also be sure to check out the e-punch splits. (Note: Unfortunately, due to the fact that everyone skipped controls and is recorded as a mispunch, the splits are not in order of finish time, nor are the "won" legs in bold type. I tried massaging the results in SportIdent so I could get everything straightened out and printed in order of winning times, but whenever I tried "correcting" peoples punches by adding in the missing controls, all the splits disappeared due to some bug in the software. Sorry about that, you'll have to slog through the page looking for what you want unless someone wants to painstaking reformat it or give me some crucial SportIdent software hint I can use to put out a new split page.)

Syd Reader was the first back through the starting area on his way into the second loop, with a 4-minute lead on Doug Stein, Wyatt Riley, and Thorsten Graeve. The second, scenic, fast-running loop turned out to be too short for these four to change positions. Craig Murray took 5th place by passing two people in the second loop.

Derek Maclean, due to a hamstring injury, did not continue on to complete the second loop, and his time on the first loop won him the Kid. Angelica Riley, Johanna Merriss, and George Minarik showed up within 15 minutes or less to claim 2nd through 4th places in the Kid. This year's Kid was long due to the length of our first loop - congratulations to all runners of the Kid!

Participants were allowed to skip one control on the first loop. Control 12 was the most commonly skipped control, with 11 a close second. These are two controls I thought most people would choose when I was designing the course and I tried to make them equally appealing to skip. I was surprised that no one skipped control number 3, and I thought more people would skip control 14.

Many thanks to all those that helped with the event. Thorsten Graeve took care of all of our dealings with the park staff and set up the electronic punch system before the event. Chuck Spalding took preregistrations, gathered together the equipment we needed, helped set controls before the event, and helped set up the start/finish area. Ev and Jean Beuerman did their magic with registration and helping set up and tear down, making it much easy to start the event smoothly. Olivia Graeve helped set up and (wo)man the start/finish area. Mark Blair, Thorsten, and Chuck all helped pick up controls. Thank you everyone!

I had a lot of fun setting the course for this event and felt very good about the feedback I received. Thank you all for your kind comments!
