This year's annual Stanford event and social was another success. Due to advances in weather control technology, the forecast rain was diverted. Almost all of the 164 or so entrants completed their courses successfully. The Stanford Orienteering Club was happy to once again host this event. Below are the complete results. Please let me know of any corrections.
On the White course, Casey Resh led the pack with a time of 24:42. And 96-year-old Wilma Leonard returned to complete another course. On Yellow, Nimish Shah finished the 4 km course in 33:40, followed by Monica Lasgoity with 35:55. On the Orange course, Steve Jankowski showed that he is still speedy, with a total time of 27:13, beating Parag Gupta by just over 6 minutes.
The winner of the daytime Score-O was once again Dan Stoll-Hadayia. He picked up all 27 controls in 49:56. Marcus Karlsson and Wyatt Riley also managed to reach all of the controls, in 52:58 and 58:26 respectively. I partly apologize for control number 16, which caused some confusion (a bit more than it was supposed to). One needed to climb stairs to reach a small interior courtyard where the plate was hung on a sign. The course setter was unaware, however, that from the east side, a lower courtyard with a statue could be reached. Sorry for the extra confusion.
The Night-O event followed the same format as the last two years, with 50- and 70-minute versions. The longer course included 10 extra controls on the far ends of the map. In the 50-minute category, Stew Hintz grabbed 18 of 22 controls, finishing with 43 seconds to spare. Jill Seaman was second with 16 controls in 45:41.
In the 70-minute course, two competitors reached all 32 controls and finished under time. Marcus Karlsson (65:21) edged out Dan Stoll-Hadayia (66:33) by just over a minute. Rex Winterbottom also grabbed all 32 controls, but returned 19 minutes overtime. For those who went to the northeast corner of the map, there was an unexpected hazard of an NCAA soccer match which appeared after the controls were set out that afternoon. For future reference, it is not recommended to try to jump a fence and run through such an event.
