Nearly 80 competitors on the advanced courses and over 100 beginners and intermediates came out to enjoy a glorious fall day at Calero Park. The orienteering went off without a hitch; the courses were well appreciated, with the excellent conditions leading to some very fast times and some close races. Below are the complete results; Also check out the e-punch splits for the advanced courses.
A few were confused by the "crag" control feature on Yellow and Orange; a crag is of course a small cliff, and its inclusion a consequence of the control descriptions being prepared by an Englishman! The cliff feature on the advanced courses also drew some attention. It seems that a cliff as described by the Condes software has only 2 legs, whereas we are all used to seeing the 4-legged variety. I guess the 2-legged ones are easier to catch!
The volunteer response was so great that no plea for help needed to be issued. Michelle McMillan, an orienteer from her Girl Scout days, helped with tasks all day long. Devon van Hoff, Thorsten Graeve, and Chuck Spalding helped with finishes. Devon also volunteered for control pickup, as did David Barr, Tony Pinkham, Mark Blair, and Penny and Harold DeMoss. Abby Wolfe and Jeff Lanam helped with beginners' clinics. Werner Haag helped with Start-O, and the ever-reliable Ev and Jean Beuerman did registration. And, lest they be taken for granted, the BAOC officers helped in various background tasks.
Congratulations to all who took part, and especially to the course winners. Nimish Shah won the White course convincingly, as did Michael Sobczyk on the Orange. The team of Pisanski and Guzinski won a hard Yellow course. It was nice to see such good completion numbers, despite the difficulty of the courses: only 4 DNF's and one mispunch were recorded on WYO out of 60+ teams.
The advanced courses saw some very close races. The Brown course had 4 different leaders before Stephanie Maclean, after trailing for the whole race, took over on the penultimate control to win by less than 30 seconds from Svetlana Kopeikina. The lead on Red changed no less than 6 times before Tapio Karras beat out Derek Maclean, also by less than 30 seconds. Dennis Wildfogel won an equally close battle with Hannu Haarma on Green, while Marcus Karlsson won the 6K Blue race in a staggering time of 52:05. James Scarborough was second in 54:25.
