The Golden Goat is a Long-O event with a mass start, wherein the competitor may leave out 1 or more controls of their choosing, (the number of skipped controls is determined by the course setter). There is always a point on the course that the runner must choose between continuing to finish the Golden Goat, or going directly to the finish line, and thereby doing the Kid Goat. Below are the complete results, including White, Yellow, and Orange.

The venue for the 2001 Golden Goat was Shell Ridge in Walnut Creek. Evan Custer put the old map on OCAD, and since OCAD by its nature makes it relatively easy to make map corrections, the course setter, Mark Blair, spent many hours upgrading the OCAD map as he was vetting the various control locations, and sent the corrections to Bob Cooley for the final OCAD mapping. As Mark was hiking around Shell Ridge, the thought came to him, "why not do a 'Goatola'" (2 loops), which would involve a map exchange, spectator control, aid station, and would also make better use of the relatively small map. So, working with that idea, Mark came up with two very good courses.

If one looks at the results, (or the map), there was no "obvious" control to skip. Each runner had to look at the course and decide what was the best one for him/ her to skip. It made for some interesting route choices. Loop 1 was 7.1k, 355M climb; loop 2 was 4.1k, 245M climb.

Unfortunately Mother Nature did not smile on us this year. It was much too hot for any long event, and I'm sure that many competitors who had planned to run the full course, and thereby be a Golden Goat, decided that they had had enough "fun" for the day when they got to the map exchange. The lure of the finish line, water, and GookinAid 30 meters away was too inviting. All that being said, however, the competitors who arrived at the map exchange, took some refreshment, looked at the second loop, and carried on have to be admired. (Perhaps they were overheated and it affected their judgement)! Wyatt Riley was at the map exchange-aid station writing down splits, and encouraged the undecided to "go for it"! Some of the looks he got in response said "YOU go for it!"

Dan Stoll-Hadayia and Penny DeMoss ran in what was probably the best O' clothes for the day: running shorts, and no T-shirt (at least not for Dan). Dan showed not only his basic running speed but also good heat tolerance and quick decision-making (skipping control number 4 on the first loop, and 23 on the second loop). Dan finished first of 19 Golden Goat finishers in 1:54:25. Penny also showed that 25 years of running marathons (many in hot weather) and good basic speed paid off under these conditions. She finished third overall of 19 finishers, and was first (and only) woman. Penny's time was 2:03:07. She skipped controls 3 and 27. Steve Gregg also showed his running ability and hot weather tolerance by his 2nd place finish in a time of 2:02:30. Steve skipped controls 9 and 27.

In the Kid Goat, Francis Leonard finished 1st in 1:12:30, skipping control 8. Matthias Kohler finished 2nd in 1:17:35, skipping #12. Anneliese Steuben finished 3rd, 1st woman, in 1:26:28, skipping #8. I'm sure many of the Kid Goat finishers would have gone on with the second loop had the weather been cooler.

Many thanks to the volunteers, who braved a blisteringly hot day:
