Presidio

May 28, 2000

by Vic Revenko, meet director

A great turnout on a beautiful Memorial Day weekend. 285 people attended the event, a record. Many decided to enjoy the day and do more then one course. complete results are below.

Behind-the-scenes help from Publicity (Nancy and Judy) probably contributed to this excellent participation. Thanks to Bob Cooley, BAOC map director, who was at hand with his printer, we were able to accommodate all who decided to try A second course. The event went smoothly, thanks to all those who volunteered to help make this a seamless day. Ev and Jean Beuerman managed registration flawlessly. We even had about 15 new members join on the spot.

Under a cloudless sky and perfect temperatures the Presidio Trust gave us permission to run the event (thanks to Rosemary Johnson for the permitting). The Park is undergoing lots of change. We confined the course to non-coastal areas because of the construction at Crissey field and other areas. This did not hamper the courses one bit. With the help of Mike Springer, the assistant meet director, we designed attractive and mostly new courses. Under the Presidio Trust, many areas (except for the golf course, cemetery, and certain other areas) are now open. The Presidio offers a mix of urban and rural settings. Of course, with the constant change not all is perfect. Advanced orienteers noted an impassable fence, a misplaced control, and some mismarked roadways. Map corrections will be made.

Oleg and Galena Shakhnovsky, Ed Ow, Scott Aster were a great help on the Starts. Beginners were attracted to the event. Tony Pinkham, Bill Papendick, Nancy Lindeman helped instruct newcomers. This resulted in few non-finishers.

Penny and Harold DeMoss, Scott Aster, Chuck Spalding, and Neal Barlow were of great assistance with recording the Finishes under a nice white tent. Marsha Jacobs was meticulous in recording the results (with the help of Mike Springer earlier). If your name is misspelled in the results that follow this writeup, it's due to unclear handwriting.

Chuck Spalding, Ev and Jean Beuerman helped me pick up the controls, a great assist at the end of a long but glorious day.

People from beyond the Bay area attended the meet. Entrants from LA, San Diego came. We held the meet open longer to accommodate latecomers due to heavy traffic and volunteers who were willing to stay longer. One person arrived from Germany five days prior to the meet. He said that he heard about BAOC through the website. He was impressed with the BAOC organization and how well volunteers pitch in to make it a success. I second this comment. Thanks to all the volunteers and participants, especially newcomers who made this a successful and fun day.
