How many people would you guess would come to an event at Annadel if it was supposed to rain? Well, the answer is 257. Granted, it didn't actually start to rain until around noon, but after that we got soaked. About 100 were BAOC regulars, and the remainder were first-timers and casual orienteers primarily from the North Bay. It's scary to think what our attendance might have been with picture-perfect weather. Below are the complete results.
Annadel has some of the finest orienteering terrain in the Bay area, and Panu Haaramo used the map and terrain to full advantage in designing a set of tough but excellent courses. Check out this Green course map (thanks, Evan!).
Winning times were on the long side, particularly on the advanced courses. The White course was won by the team of Sage Sokol and Caleb Acker, while the Yellow was bested by Pete Dellavalle. Both courses were crowded with new-comers, as we ran out of parking and ran out of White and Yellow maps. The Orange course proved to be difficult for all, as the winner, Deron Van Hoff, took 84 minutes. However, Brian Donohue took 30 minutes off that time as he blazed through Orange as a second course.
Brown was won by our only woman winner, Katya Svistun, with Brian Donohue in second. Hannu Haarma led on Green, with the 2nd-place Evan Custer exclaiming as he crossed the finish line: "God, I love orienteering!" The Red leaders were Gary Carpenter, Matthias Kohler, and Tapio Karras. Blue was the most competitive course of the day, with Neal Barlow's winning time of 105 minutes less than two minutes faster than Syd Reader and Dan Stoll-Hadayia.
With the crowds and deteriorating weather conditions, the event was a challenge to keep running. Fortunately, many people pitched in to help wherever needed, often without being asked to. Judy Koehler did an outstanding job of publicity, getting the event prominently mentioned in all of the local newspapers.
